Memories In Future Tense
Church Lyrics

And ahead of me
A new face and street, people who meet you
Instead of me
They bring you, they take you
They own you, they make you
Last year today you turn and you say
You close your eyes, the moon starts to rise
And you scream for me
I calm you, I'm with you
What did they ever give you
Memories in future tense
Memories don't make much sense
Last year today a radio plays
Such a simple song
The music surreal and you almost could feel
That there's nothing wrong
They bought you, they sold you
And all the things they told you
In the song βMemories In Future Tenseβ by Church, the lyrics invoke a sense of longing and regret for a lost love. The singer is reflecting on a past relationship in which he was replaced by someone new. He remembers how close they were and how they used to dream about their future together, but now those dreams seem distant and unattainable. The singer seems to be struggling with the idea of how quickly things can change and how easily dreams can be shattered. The line βMemories in future tense, memories donβt make much senseβ captures this idea perfectly, as memories often involve projecting ourselves into a future that we can no longer access.
The lyrics also seem to touch upon themes of control and power dynamics in relationships. The singer suggests that his former partner was βownedβ and βmadeβ by the new people in her life, and that they were ultimately responsible for taking her away from him. There is a sense of helplessness in these lyrics, as if the singer is struggling to come to terms with how little control he had over the situation. The refrain βthey bought you, they sold you, and all the things they told youβ suggests that his ex-partner was manipulated and taken advantage of, and that the promise of a better future turned out to be a lie.

Awesome song. Their first album is so underrated...

This early stuff from the Church is certainly I think the most overlooked. It's got great energy, beat and and sound, while certainly hinting the future addition of psychedelic prospects for the bands later albums.
