Metropolis
Church Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

There'll never be another quite like you
I'm so involved with everything you do
Don't say nothing good will ever come of this
Don't say the damage is worse than it is

Back in Metropolis, circuses and elephants
Where the oranges grew
And back in Metropolis nothing can ever topple us
When I'm standing with you

You stare down at some crowd from your trapeze
And when you fell they fell down on their knees
And when you broke they scrambled for a piece
And when you spoke I felt their anger freeze

Back in Metropolis, circuses and elephants
Where the oranges grew
And back in Metropolis nothing can ever topple us
When I'm standing with you
And back in Metropolis talk about a holocaust
And then visit the zoo
And back in Metropolis the weather is ridiculous
What's it all leading to

And it's only a day away
We could leave tonight
You could sleep along the way
Dream in black and white

Overall Meaning

"Metropolis" is a song by UK electronic band, Church, and was released in 1996. The song is about the deep connection between two individuals, that no matter what happens, they will always stand together. The opening lines of the song, "There'll never be another quite like you, I'm so involved with everything you do" shows the unique bond that exists between the two individuals. They share their pain and suffering, and they fight for each other's survival. The lyrics also suggest that people around them acknowledge the strength of their connection, "And when you spoke I felt their anger freeze".

The song title refers to a fictional place called Metropolis, which is often used in literature, films, and music to represent a city of the future with a complex social structure. The lyrics provide a commentary on the highs and lows of life in the city, "Back in Metropolis, circuses and elephants, where the oranges grew". The song touches on the idea that in spite of the destruction, natural disasters, and wars, there is still beauty and hope to be found in the Metropolis where they stand together. The chorus, "And back in Metropolis nothing can ever topple us, When I'm standing with you", reinforces the idea that their relationship is strong enough to overcome any obstacle.

Nunca habrá otra como tú
Estoy tan involucrado con todo lo que haces. No digas que nada bueno saldrá de esto.
No digas que el daño es peor de lo que es. Volver a Metrópolis, circos y elefantes

1990 this song was released. I was 25 and fresh out of The Marines from an awful combat tour in Columbia S.A. and terribly addicted to Cocaine. I was at the end of my rope without hope of living much longer. Working at a glass shop in West Los Angeles, I would hear this song play on 106.7 KROQ from time to time and the sound of this song kinda relieved my pain for a bit.
12 October 1990 I went to rehab, Pacifica House on El Segundo Blvd. There I got clean and a new outlook on life. I lost track of this song until a few years ago. I will be 32 years Clean and Sober in a few months and listening to Metropolis takes me to this time of the year back then and my struggle to live. I am happy to hear it with Sober ears today, it warms my heart all these years later.

@Kenny Gerchow well said!

Kenny Gerchow

couldn’t agree more. I was knee deep in extreme music during their heyday and this release. The Church always took me to a completely different realm of pure wonder.

Matthew Fooks

This was one of those songs that when I first heard it, I felt as if it had been on the airwaves since I was a toddler. It is one of those songs that feels like it has always been and will always be.

AK Vox

timeless my man, this one's timeless

Doyle Perkins

Probably the same for you as I feel about two songs by the Beatles, "Day Tripper" and "Friends and Lovers," two songs which have become the defining sounds of my life going all the way back. As for "Metropolis" being your very own life's siren call, you could have scarcely picked anything better..."Metropolis" is one of my all time favourite songs...

Marty Wilson Piper is one of the best guitarists ever, in my opinion. I still love the Church even after all these years.

Michele Bravin

I do agree but I would consider Peter at the same level. They have different styles.
