from the morning to the evening bell
I burned my fingers on the stove.
I have problems letting go
Winter creeps in & settles on the bones
just summer passes on tip-toes
I made a fire, cast a spell, crossed my heart and wish you well.
She is wild as the garden thorn bush
so I do not touch her until I know how she grows
I lost the race; I'm waiting on the show
Punched the wind out from my sails long ago,
Every action has a motive and a goal
I make a fist of auburn leaves and rub my hand upon my knee
So I ask myself now, alone
Should I follow you or be gone
The lyrics to Ciaran Lavery's song "The Show" are filled with themes of longing, uncertainty, and the struggle to let go. The opening lines, "I want to know you like I know myself / from the morning to the evening bell" express a desire for a deep connection with someone else. The line "I burned my fingers on the stove / I have problems letting go" suggests that the singer has experienced pain in trying to hold onto someone or something.
The second verse introduces a character, possibly a love interest, that the singer is cautious about approaching. The line "she is wild as the garden thorn bush / so I do not touch her until I know how she grows" conveys the idea that this person may be difficult to handle or may have a hidden complexity that the singer is not yet aware of. The singer also references "winter" and "summer" passing, which could be symbolic of the changing seasons of a relationship.
The third verse touches on the idea that every action has a motive or goal, and the singer seems to be reflecting on their own intentions. The line "I make a fist of auburn leaves and rub my hand upon my knee" creates a visual of someone nervously fidgeting or grappling with their thoughts. The final line, "So I ask myself now, alone / should I follow you or be gone" hints at a decision that the singer must make about the future of the relationship.
Overall, "The Show" is a beautifully written song that explores the complexities of human relationships and the emotions that come with trying to navigate them.
