Lover
Cilla Black Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

How gentle is the rain, that falls softly on the meadow;
Birds high upon the trees serenade the flow'rs with their melodies.
Oh, see there beyond the hill, the bright colors of the rainbow;
Some magic from above made this day for us, just to fall in love.

How gentle is the rain, that falls gently on the meadow;
Birds high upon the trees serenade the flow'rs with their melodies.
Oh, see there beyond the hill, the bright colors of the rainbow;
Some magic from above made this day for us, just to fall in love.

You'll hold me in your arms, and say once again you love me;
And if your love is true, ev'rything will be just as wonderful.

You'll hold me in your arms, and say once again you love me;

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to "Lover's Concerto" by Cilla Black describe a beautiful and romantic scene where rain falls gently on a meadow while birds sing and flowers are serenaded with their melodies. The description of the bright colors of a rainbow beyond a hill adds to the magical feeling of the moment. The singer suggests that this day was "made for us, just to fall in love," implying that the romance of the moment was fated or meant to be. The second verse repeats these sentiments, reinforcing the romantic and almost dreamlike quality of the scene.

The final verse of the song has the singer being held in the arms of their lover, who once again professes their love. The singer suggests that if this love is true, then everything will be wonderful. This implies that the love they share is powerful enough to overcome any obstacles that may come their way. The repetition of some of the lyrics throughout the song adds to the overall dreamlike quality, giving the impression that the moment the two lovers are sharing is suspended in time.

Cilla Black was one of the few performers who sang as well on stage as she did in a recording studio. Superb!

True story: Just after this had been released in late 1963, I was in a club in London (I can't remember which one) where Cilla was appearing. This was her debut single, and very few people had ever heard of her, me included. I was standing only a few feet away from her while she was singing this song and I turned to my companion and said... "she'll never get anywhere". How wrong could I have been!! I don't think she heard me, at least I hope she didn't........

Dennis Lee Cleven

This is Cilla of The Cavern. I don't know why Bobby Willis felt that this was not suited for Cilla's voice. She sounds like a true scouser and the song has great production

Phil from Nantwich

Both of my favourite Cilla singles were written by McCartney. Love of the loved and Step Inside Love

Alf Ching

A truly great bit of drumming,when drummers did the biz.

Carlos Gómez

For some strange reason, I prefer Cilla's version a thousand times to the original version of The Beatles. I love it.
