I Drove All Night
Cindy Lauper Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I had to escape
The city was sticky and cruel
Maybe I should have called you first
But I was dying to get to you
I was dreaming while I drove
The long straight road ahead, uh, huh

Could taste your sweet kisses
Your arms open wide
This fever for you is just burning me up inside

I drove all night to get to you
Is that alright?
I drove all night
Crept in your room
Woke you from your sleep
To make love to you
Is that alright?
I drove all night

What in this world
Keeps us from tearing apart
No matter where I go I hear
The beating of your heart
I think about you
When the night is cold and dark, uha, yeah
No one can move me
The way that you do
Nothing erases the feeling between me and you

I drove all night to get to you
Is that alright?
I drove all night
Crept in your room
Woke you from your sleep
To make love to you
Is that alright?
I drove all night

Could taste your sweet kisses
Your arms open wide
This fever for you is just burning me up inside

I drove all night to get to you
Is that alright?
I drove all night
Crept in your room
Woke you from your sleep

To make love to you
I drove all night... to hold you tight

Overall Meaning

In Cindy Lauper's hit song "I Drove All Night," the singer is on a mission to get to her lover, no matter the cost. The lyrics paint a vivid picture of her desperation, as she proclaims that she "had to escape" the sticky, cruel city where she was to reach her love. While she admits that she "maybe should have called you first," it's clear that she couldn't wait any longer to be with him. As she drives down the long, straight road ahead, she dreams of his sweet kisses and open arms, consumed by her feverish desire for him.

Despite the many obstacles that stand in her way, including the cold and dark night and the beating of her own heart, nothing can stop her from reaching her destination. When she finally arrives at her lover's room, she creeps in and wakes him from his sleep, ready to make love to him. Though she acknowledges the risks she took and asks if it's alright, she drove all night to hold him tight.

The song's lyrics can be interpreted in a few ways. On one hand, it could be seen as a declaration of devotion and commitment, as the singer is willing to go to great lengths to be with her love. On the other hand, it could be seen as a cautionary tale about the dangers of obsession and impulsivity, as the singer risks everything to satisfy her overwhelming desire. Either way, "I Drove All Night" is a powerful and moving song that speaks to the depths of passion and desire.

She doesn't get enough praise for her incredible vocal talent.

Sadly underrated....everyone focused on her quirkiness. It overshadowed her immense talent. I'm so glad this generation is rediscovering her.....

@TheMuddatrucker

Okolo Pierre not underrated by me, born 1980 so it’s the music I remember the most! And since I regularly drive all night it’s fitting 😁

@TheHoopyscoopy

Agreed. She sounds best when she's wailing and really into a song. This for example really suits her. True Colors not so much. She sounds too mousy and sheepish for me when she sings quiet like that... Like my animal metaphors? :oP

@coreyh5989

I have no problem liking her and I was a grunge/rock type fan. She definitely was underrated due to her antics. But she has a powerful voice and she did this song better than anyone else.

@TheHoopyscoopy

Agreed.
