My Love
Circa Waves Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I know it's not enough
To be with you
Clinging to the walls
You can see through

You need to reel in your tongue
‘Cause I know it's not enough
To stay young

And I'm giving up my love
My love to something else
And I'm giving up my love
My love to something else

You are like the waves
That pull me
Underneath the days
Twisting

But I need to reel in some air
‘Cause I know it's not enough
To get there
To get there

And I'm giving up my love
My love to something else
And I'm giving up my love
My love to something else

And I can't speak for anyone but myself
And I can't speak for anyone but myself
I know it's not enough to be with you
Yeah I know it's not enough to be with you
To be with you

And I'm giving up my love
My love to something else

Oh
My love
My love to something else

Oh

My love
My love to something else

Overall Meaning

In "My Love," Circa Waves' lead singer, Kieran Shudall, sings about the painful realization that he can't be with the person he loves. He knows that his love isn't enough for them, and he can't continue to cling to them like he has been. The clinginess is likened to clinging to walls that his love interest can see through. He needs to let go and move on.

The line "you are like the waves that pull me underneath the days twisting" is where the band's name comes from. It's a metaphor for the destructive power of love, how it can both lift you up and drag you down. The singer acknowledges that he needs to take a breath and come up for air, but he's not sure if he can get there.

The repetition of "I'm giving up my love" is both a declaration and a sigh of resignation. He's not just giving up on this person, but he's giving up the love he has for them to something else. He's not sure what that something else is, but he knows it's time to move on. The lines "And I can't speak for anyone but myself/ And I know it's not enough to be with you" drive home the point that he can't force this person to love him and that he needs to prioritize his own well-being.

Overall, "My Love" is a bittersweet song about the end of a relationship and the need to move on. It's a painful but necessary process that we all inevitably go through at some point.

It makes me insanely happy when I see a music video involving women which doesn't sexualise them and is not sexist. This is yet another reason why Circa Waves are my favourite band. Good job :)
