In the Middle of It All
Citizen Lyrics

And in the middle of it all
And in the middle of it all
And in the middle of it all
And in the middle of it all
And in the middle of it all
And in the middle of it all
And in the middle of it all
I saw you there

Fellow dies with no one there to care for him
Wondered what the world is like outside his room he′s living in
A normal man that dressed himself in women's threads
He remembered every word, her face, her body in the shade

And in the middle of it all
And in the middle of it all
And in the middle of it all
And in the middle of it all
I saw you there

Sorrow; the unpredictable has found a hand to hold
Absent into the fog coming home
Maelstrom; you are my only God
Absent into the fog
I succumb to your every want

And in the middle of it all
And in the middle of it all
And in the middle of it all
And in the middle of it all
I saw you there

She′s the one that everybody marvels at
Delicate with her voice and flowers strung across her head
She's the one that everybody notices
She thinks about an older friend, his face, his body in her bed

Sorrow; the unrequited lust that follows everyone
Absent into the fog coming home
Maelstrom; my undecided trust
Absent into the fog
I succumb to your every want

I wasn't ready for this
Been strung out looking for a signal that was never there
I wasn′t ready for this
Suspicion reaching down to touch my fingertips again

Sorrow; the celebration halts, the blinding lights are gone
Absent into the fog coming home
Maelstrom; my love for you is strong
Absent into the fog
I succumb to your every want

And in the middle of it all
And in the middle of it all
And in the middle of it all
And in the middle of it all
And in the middle of it all
And in the middle of it all

And in the middle of it all

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Citizen's song In the Middle of It All convey a feeling of being lost and unsure, yet still finding comfort in the presence of someone familiar. The repetition of "And in the middle of it all" creates a sense of chaos and confusion, as if the singer is struggling to find their bearings. However, amidst all the uncertainty, they see someone they know, symbolized by the line "I saw you there."

The verses of the song describe different individuals grappling with their own personal struggles. One person is dying alone, another is a man who cross-dresses and remembers a past lover, and a third is a woman admired by everyone but who thinks about an older friend. These vignettes highlight the personal turmoil that can exist beneath the surface of seemingly normal or successful lives.

The chorus of the song brings the focus back to the singer, who feels drawn to someone despite the chaos around them. The lines "Sorrow; the unpredictable has found a hand to hold / Absent into the fog coming home / Maelstrom; you are my only God / Absent into the fog / I succumb to your every want" suggest a sense of surrender or submission to the presence of the other person. The use of words like "maelstrom" and "fog" imply a feeling of being overwhelmed or lost, but also perhaps the possibility of finding clarity or direction through connection.

I love you Citizen, keep changing.

Never boring. Never constant.

Everyday she alters who she is to fit into a new image of herself, but everyday she takes a little bit away from her identity (the sphere in the woods). There are messages (letters) from family/friends who are concerned, however her fear of accepting herself manifests this into something monstrous. Eventually what was once a beautiful dense construct is stripped down to nothing. One day she wakes up with no identity or direction as she wanders aimlessly into the distance.

Damm dude spot on ,i lowkey feel like tht its not a good feeling.

@codydarling2235

that's an awesome interpretation, and i think you're right! my initial thought was that it represented the vague anxiety and monotony associated with growing up. she's going through the motions of life, doing what she's supposed to, stripping away pieces of her past in the process. she sheds the beads of childhood and starts cooking pasta in a dorm- it's more grown up, it's what's expected. she gets married not because she wants to, but because she has to. she has children, gives them birthday parties with cowboys like children are supposed to have, becomes an elementary school teacher because she doesn't know what else to do. she wakes up realizing how she's wasted her life trying to do everything a life is "supposed" to be, even though none of those things are what she wanted. the reason i think this is because of her to-do list at the beginning. it seemed contrived, forced, and set the tone to the video for me. maybe i'm totally wrong but i thought it was an interesting idea
