Pablo Picasso
Citizen Cope Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

The woman that I love
Is forty feet tall
She's a movie star
She's all in the papers
And everywhere i go
People hand me quarters
And they pat me on the back
They treat me like I'm famous
I'll never leave her side
'Cause today can be dangerous
And when the night arrives
The light hit her features
And the cars drive by
Just so they could see her
And she never bats an eye
When someone takes her picture

Mr.Officer if you've come to take her
Then that means one of us
Gonna end up in a stretcher
Gonna end up in the papers, going end up in the papers, yeah

If i had a pistol
I'd brandish it and wave it
She's the only one alive that knows that I'm not crazy
She's gonna testify on my behalf
Down at the Navy
So I can get some peace
And provide for my babies
I got a stick and a bottle
I'll pretend I got a razor
Helicopters and cameras all shottin' for the station

They say that a wild man defending his lady
But for some odd reason they keep calling you a painting

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Citizen Cope's song "Pablo Picasso" depict the love that the singer has for a woman who is larger than life. She is forty feet tall and is a famous movie star who is frequently in the papers. Everywhere the singer goes, people recognize him as the partner of this famous woman, and they treat him like he is famous too. Despite the attention and potential danger that comes with being associated with a celebrity, the singer vows to never leave her side. When the sun sets and the light hits her features, people drive by just to catch a glimpse of her, but she remains unfazed when someone takes her picture.

The chorus of the song speaks to the singer's fierce dedication to his love. He warns a police officer not to take her away, as that would result in somebody ending up in a stretcher and likely ending up in the papers. The singer declares that if he had a gun, he would brandish it to defend his love, as she is the only person who knows that he is not crazy. He hopes that she will testify on his behalf so that he can gain some peace and provide for his children. Despite the danger and chaos surrounding their relationship, the love that the singer feels for this woman is unshakeable.

For those who are confused or misinformed about the interpretation, this song is from the perspective of a homeless man who has lived most of his life on the street. The location he resides is under a billboard or mural of a woman. He has fallen in love with her image an has chosen to live, protect and stay at that spot with her. He believes she too loves him because she can't treat him bad like most people do. And never leaves his side because she can't so in turn he never leaves her. But all in all it is a love song/story.
