1. City Boy was a moderately successful British rock band in the late 1970s, characterised by complex vocal arrangements and heavy guitars. Their most popular songs were 5-7-0-5 and The Day The Earth Caught Fire. Their first five albums were produced by Robert John "Mutt" Lange.
In the early 1970's Lol Mason, Steve Broughton, Max Thomas and Chris Dunn were playing folk music in the Birmingham area. They toured the folk clubs of the Midlands until, towards the end of 1975, they decided to try it the professional way. Meanwhile Broughton had begun to write quite impressive songs. They were offered a recording contract by Phonogram Records on condition that they add drums and electric guitar. This prompted them to recruit Roger Kent and Mike Slamer.
Their first albums failed to impress the audience, although some critics gave quite favourable reviews to City Boy (1975) and Dinner At The Ritz (1976). It was not until 1978, and their hit song 5-7-0-5, and the subsequent album Book Early, that the public realised their potential. The single reached the Top 10 of the British charts and the album scratched the Top 30 of the UK Albums Chart.
They were not really able to repeat their success with their 1979 album, The Day The Earth Caught Fire, and its title song as a single release. After that, Dunn and Broughton left the band, but they had one more mildly successful album with Heads Are Rolling in 1980. Many critics believe this one to be their best, but then their record deal expired. In 1981 one last record, It's Personal, failed to attract any attention, and was only released in Scandinavia. In 1982, the band split up.
The first four of City Boy's albums were on the Vertigo label in Europe and Mercury in the US and Canada. They signed a new record contract with Atlantic Records for the US and Canada commencing with the release of "The Day The Earth Caught Fire"

What A Night
City Boy Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
I'm so happy lying here, reclining in this easy chair,
Wond'rin' what the hell could go wrong.
My mind's confused, my body tired,
I wonder if I'm still alive,
Has Anybody here please got the time
Oh no, the time
(Chorus)
Ooh what a night, Ooh what a night, Ooh what a night, Ooh what
a night, Ooh what a night, Ooh what a night, Ooh what a night,
Now the morning's drawing near, my head she thump from the beer, And
the telephone she ring (who's there?) My God that typist that I floored I
must have drunk more than I thought, Can anybody here please show me
the door Oh no, you want more?
(Chorus repeat)
The City Boy's song "What a Night" is about a night of partying and drinking where the singer is now lying in an easy chair, wondering if anything could go wrong. The lyrics suggest that the singer is feeling lost and disoriented, with their mind confused and body tired. They wonder if they are still alive and ask if anyone has the time. The chorus repeats and expresses the excitement and energy of the night.
As the morning draws near, the singer's head is throbbing from alcohol, and the phone rings. They answer to find out it's a typist who they had floored the night before. The singer realizes that they had drunk more than they thought and are seeking a way out of this situation. The chorus repeats once again, emphasizing the intensity and wildness of the party.
Overall, the song is about the wild and crazy night that the City Boy had and the aftermath of dealing with its consequences. The lyrics depict a party lifestyle that can be both exhilarating and exhausting.
