Please Let Me Know
City Lights Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Someone please let me know
That it's okay for me to not let go
Of how it felt to have
The entire world at my feet
Not a worry on my mind
Please let me know
When we were kids
Things were so different
People didn't spend all their time
Talkin' shit on the internet
If you've got something to say
Why not say it to my face
We spent all our time
Wishing we were older
But now we're getting old
And it fucking sucks
We try our very best
To stay young at heart
When we were young
Life was so dissonant
Sitting on the edge of our seats
Anticipating what would come next
Who'd have thought that someday
Would get here so damn soon
I'm gonna put real life aside
Give it some faith
And let fate decide

'Cause sometimes our destiny
Is beyond our control

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of City Lights's song Please Let Me Know are about reminiscing the past and coming to terms with the fact that time flies and things change. The song starts with the singer asking for someone to tell them that it's okay to hold on to memories of a time when they felt like they had the entire world at their feet and didn't have a worry on their mind. The singer then contrasts this memory with the present, where people spend all their time talking negatively on the internet. The singer seems to miss the simplicity and honesty of childhood and urges people to speak their minds face to face rather than online.

The second verse of the song continues with the theme of nostalgia, with the singer reflecting on how they spent their childhood wishing to be older, but now that they're getting old, they realize how much it sucks. They try their best to stay youthful in spirit and not let go of their past, but they acknowledge that sometimes, their destiny is beyond their control. The song focuses on the idea that life changes, people grow up, and time goes by, but that it's okay to hold on to good memories and that change is inevitable.

One interesting fact about "Please Let Me Know" is that it was released as a single by City Lights before being included on their album, The Way Things Should Be. The song has been praised for its catchy melody and relatable lyrics, which many people can identify with as they too struggle with nostalgia and the changes of adulthood. The band has also stated in interviews that they wanted this song to be a departure from their earlier, more aggressive sound, and instead, they focused on the melody and the emotions it portrayed.

Saw them a few weeks ago in Columbus with TBS! They sounded really good live, surprisingly. Weirdest thing was, I bought their album a few months earlier on a whim. Awesome decision. I feel like I was only one of a handful singing along with their songs, though they definitely deserve more recognition.
