This not really an entirely american western movie, though. Lots of Italian talent, aka foreign, style much different from John Wayne and Hollywood. Wikipedia says that it has lots of references to american westerns :-) But certainly one of the BEST movies and BEST music indeed!

The movie in turn influenced and inspired American filmmakers to come up with great and memorable movies like The Wild Bunch, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, and The Unforgiven where the good, the bad, and the ugly all had stories worthy of telling and knowing.

I first watched this movie in 1969 with my father at a drive-in theater in California. The haunting music of Ennio Morricone and the wordless vocals of Edda Dell'Orso are deeply etched in my memory. The brilliant Ennio Morricone and my father have passed but this performance by the DSO and Tuva Semmingsen brought that childhood memory back to life.

I just can't stop myself. Watching again, and then again when I feel the need to reassure myself that humanity has potential for infinite grace. It's just so damned beautiful, so well composed and performed, and Tuva's contribution is just transporting. Humanity may have potential for truly awful evil acts and vulgar activities, but this performance wipes the the slate clean, and then some.

"Wiping the slate clean" was my way of emphasizing that exceptional music has the effect of reminding us of the community of mankind and the heights of grace we can achieve. And to the insight it provides that there is such a thing as "universal goodness" out there, and we can be part of it.

But a quirk in humans is that our personal moral code is not hard-wired like wild animals, but a conscious personal choice. So we end up with this huge population with the same human phenotypes and 46 chromosomes, but having completely diverse personal moral codes. Like a Stalin on one side, and Doctors without Borders on the other.

No amount of musical excellence will save Stalin, say, from roasting into crispy little Stalin fritters when he leaves this mortal existence. Thanks, I think your comment is direct on target. (Sorry, again I wrote more than intended.)

You could keep a roomful of philosophy grad students chasing their tails for a year, and you still won't get a consensus. Too many examples of evil or good acts producing both enduring or short-lived effects to make a general rule.

Even Judeo-Christian theology gives conflicting answers. On one hand you have the Good Samaritan, whose charitable deed of providing water is still remembered 2000 years after the event, and remains a lesson in morality. On the other you have God stating that the sins of the fathers (and the resulting bad karma) will be carried on to their future progeny for 7 additional generations.

It's a great discussion subject, but in the end there is not going to be a consensus answer. I'm trying to not sound butt-headed about this, but your and my position are probably equally valid with equal valid examples, and the conclusion will be the one that best represents the person's outlook. (Apologies if anything in this response offended. My writing skills suck sometimes.)

Imagine all the years and decades of love for music, the hard training day after day.... Then all the practising, the organisation, the solving of conflicts, the decisions, the learning to cooperate, the honing of every sound, correcting imprecisions in the tempo.... If we stringed each of the musicians´ decades of practice one after another, we would get millennia. We´d get into the times of the Ancient Rome. Imagine what must have come together to create this out-of-this-world masterpiece!

For some reason...when a great orchestra plays iconic tunes it seems to highlight just how brilliant & original the music is. It's amazing how much this piece meanders along - you can feel an epic story unfold, musically.

Wow! What an orchestra! So interesting with all the "non-traditional" instruments incorporated. And Tuva! Such versatility (if you watch other clips such as "The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly". What incredible talent all around. Love seeing the huge range of ages of people in this orchestra. Looks like they are all loving what they are doing. Bravo to the Danes!
