Soldier
Civil Twilight Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I take aim from the kitchen window
I take aim from up and down below
I take aim from the tree in your backyard
I fall asleep but I'm always on guard
I take the shots but I have no authority
I take the shots but I'm not guilty
I'm just a soldier in another war
It doesn't matter who I'm fighting for

I don't stop till my country says so
I don't stop till the end of the show
I don't know why I hold this gun

I'm just a soldier
Fighting for someone
I have a wife and a big ol' family
I have a wife and she's waiting at home for me
I cleanse my sins as I walk through that door
It doesn't matter what I've done before

I don't stop till my mission is done
I don't stop till they tell me I've won
I don't know what I'm fighting for
I'm just a soldier aiming for one more

My family they cover me
My family they cover me
All I see is what I believe
I am not guilty, no
I am not guilty

I don't stop not even in my dreams
I don't stop seeing things that I've seen

I don't know why I raise this hell
I'm just a soldier fighting for someone else

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Civil Twilight's song "Soldier" convey the personal and psychological struggles of an anonymous soldier who is assigned to fight a war, without being certain of the cause he fights for, except that it is a mission that he must complete. The song commences with the words "I take aim from the kitchen window/I take aim from up and down below/I take aim from the tree in your backyard/I fall asleep but I'm always on guard," which symbolizes the pervasive paranoia and anxiety experienced by soldiers who must be prepared to fight at all times.

The lyrics continue, "I take the shots but I have no authority/I take the shots, but I'm not guilty/I'm just a soldier in another war/It doesn't matter who I'm fighting for," echoing the common conflict experienced by soldiers who must follow orders without knowing the full extent of the repercussions of their actions. The words "I don't stop till my mission is done/I don't stop till they tell me I've won" reveals the soldier's aim to complete his task, and the final line "I'm just a soldier fighting for someone else" highlights the soldier's disconnection from the war and the overriding feeling of fighting for something that is not his own.

Overall, the lyrics of "Soldier" by Civil Twilight communicate a message of the internal conflict and moral burden a soldier carries when fighting in a war without knowing the cause they fight for.

The singer's voice is so unique and clear, This is one of my favorite bands. they are so good. beyond good. Just the singer's voice alone, the drummer's amazing drum skills alone, and the third guy's guitar playin alone are awesome, and together they are amazing. this song has a good pulse, very catchy. So so so much better than the overplayed pop and rap music that comes on now. And yet, they are so underrated. But sooooooo good!! <3

These guys are so sick live. Its just amazing to watch them perform their craft so well and with such intensity. I can't wait for the new album to drop in March. been listening to a couple teasers off their facebook page. A tour best be following the release!

scootw50

a power trio. a singer with a distinct voice who plays bass and piano. playing good rock n' roll in a pop format. catchy songs. i do declare that 'civil twilight' are the new 'the police'. and there is nothing wrong with that.
