@Tiara we don’t need to consume animal products for health or nutrition, and in fact it’s healthier for you to not consume animal products.

This makes consuming animal products completely unnecessary.

The way we treat animals is cruel and inhumane. Considering we don’t actually need to eat animals at all, this cruelty and inhumanity is ethically and morally unjustifiable.

I think that something to take seriously. Basically, if you think it’s wrong to be cruel to animals, then you need to be vegan to live in line with your own moral values.

That’s not considering the environmental argument. The objective fact of the matter is we in the west need to reduce our meat consumption by at least 90% in order to meet climate commitments. Being vegan is more beneficial for the environment than recycling. I think that’s something also worth taking seriously.

Of course we all want the US out of Syria, but the situation is a little more complicated than just “out altogether faster = better.” The Kurds of Rojava are being essentially genocide in the Afrin canton, their incredible social revolution crushed by the joint efforts of Erdogan’s military and the Islamist militias who he has partnered with in the war on Rojava (and lets be real— on the Kurds especially, who he has always hated and demonized).

The US used the YPG/YPJ as basically the primary ground force to fight ISIS (a problem the US largely created) back. But the US never gave them significant support in forms that would actually help them after the US leaves, because Turkey is a NATO ally and Erdogan would’ve been pissed if we gave them significant heavy weaponry or technology (despite the fact that YPD/SDF are clearly the most progressive, secular, pro-democracy force in the region— the only one tbh).

Right now, at this point, the situation is very clear. Turkey invaded Efrin (the central canton of Rojava), commuted large scale ethnic cleansing and had their allied Islamist gangs brutalize the people there, kidnapping, robbing, and everything else you can imagine. Ethics is about predictable human consequences. The reality is that the US has already been in Syria, has been supporting horrific groups in order to overthrow Assad, and they have also given some support to YPG/YPJ (mostly air support) to have them overcome ISIS. In a vacuum, of course I would say “Yes, let’s leave Syria altogether.” But geopolitics and ethical realities don’t exist in a vacuum. Absolutely we should stop our destructive actions in Syria immediately. Stop arming Islamists, stop trying to overthrow Assad for our own geopolitical reasons (and I’d add “stop supporting Turkey and Israel’s actions” as another very significant move to cease).

But as I said, to make ethical and practical determinations, we have to think about what will happen if we make a decision— not just what sounds nice to us in a vacuum, in principle. YPD/SDF have done so much good in the regions they’ve liberated. Are they perfect? Absolutely not. But compared to any of the Islamists or authoritarian reactionary statists who have a shot at power in the region, they are amazing, and while the material conditions are still very hard in their autonomous region, many people’s lives have been made infinitely better than they were under ISIS, or Assad, or than they would be under occupation by Turkey and their militant allies... Clearly— we can see the atrocities they’ve been committing in their regions, though they aren’t well-reported. Setting aside the fact that people in Rojava’s territory have actual democratic mechanisms to participate in self-governance (something that we can’t even claim to have in the West), setting aside that Rojava has made feminism a core principle without the brutal authoritarianism that secular states like those of the Ba’ath Party have come with... looking at things as they are: it is a false dichotomy to act like the option is “We continue to aggress against Assad in attempts to overthrow him, or we leave altogether and everything is fine and we can feel good about our principled position.” I am an anti-imperialist. Noam Chomsky is one of the most significant and influential anti-imperialist activists in modern Western history, and he’s saying the same thing— we should really consider why people who care about this issue are not just jumping on the bandwagon. The reason is because in reality, the option where we just completely leave Syria altogether, all at once, literally means that we are abandoning Rojava to be destroyed by Turkey and Islamists. We are abandoning many Kurdish people to be ethnically cleansed. We are abandoning the women in these regions who have been liberated to have god knows what horrors imposed and inflicted on them by these Islamist forces. And we are abandoning the single most left-wing, libertarian, and democratic force in the Middle East to be snuffed out like it had never existed.

These are people’s lives at stake, and our government has already jeopardized them, first out of convenience, to manipulate them into fighting ISIS for us, then because our real alliance was with Turkey all along so we never had any intent on hanging around (and yet some authoritarian leftists still love to act like the fact that we opportunistically provided some air support means that Rojava is literally just some CIA proxy whose purpose is to expand Western imperialism)...

I do want us out of Syria, but this is not a case of Trump making a good, anti-imperialist move. We are enabling Turkey to do what they’re doing in Rojava exactly like we’re enabling Saudi Arabia in Yemen and Israel in Palestine. None of these smaller states could commit the mass atrocities they do if ours stopped providing diplomatic and military support on a continuous basis. I don’t want the US in the Middle East at all, but we have created conditions which jeopardize the lives of literally millions of people, and since it’s our subservient allies doing the killing, our state’s inaction is still an action which is making these atrocities possible*. We support Israeli and Saudi and Turkish imperialism precisely because our allies’ imperialism by and large still serves our own imperial interests. Our neocons would *love for Israel to take control of Palestine or Syria or anywhere else which isn’t in our grasp yet. Likewise, they’d be happy to see the leftists of Rojava and the Kurds crushed to nothing now that they’ve played their role in our eyes. I think that anyone who is seriously concerned about imperialism for the right reasons, and not just because it sounds like a nice moral stance, should really think long and hard about this case, because just abandoning them to be massacred by our own ally is not a solution. If we could stop this diplomatically, without any forced in the region, I’d love that, and maybe if our rulers had the will we could, but I have no confidence in that, and I don’t think it’s our position to gamble with their lives like that. We could stop our really egregious, criminal actions today and still offer some form of protection for Rojava and the Kurds; Turkey does not have the capacity to aggress against the US. Our continued presence (just to the extent that we’ve already been in Rojava, which is not the part of our operations directed at Assad) would give us time to diplomatically prevent Turkey from engaging in this genocidal imperial aggression.

Geopolitics is complicated, and it’s not always extremely obvious what the right move is, which is why I think it’s important that we are guided by real ethical principles that take our consequences into account rather than just general ideas about what we generally like to see. It’s too late to really discuss now, because we’re already leaving, but yeah... I wouldn’t consider enabling an allied imperial force to assault people far more aggressively than we would have as a great anti-imperialist position.

I really do want the US out of everywhere, but it does make a difference what is being done where, why, and (perhaps most importantly) what will happen if it stops abruptly, if we want to judge what is the best way to roll back our empire. If we had the option, somewhere in the world, of pulling all of our involvement out of a country tomorrow morning, but we knew that if we leave, it will enable a fascist dictator to take over, of it will guarantee some kind of humanitarian crisis that could kill hundreds of thousands of people, then as an anti-imperialist I would say that we should figure out a way to pull out over some time while providing whatever it would take to prevent that from happening. This isn’t a binary where we’re either committing settler-colonial mass murder or we have absolutely no connection to the country in question. There are all kinds of ways we can relate to another country, and there are ways which can benefit the other country without imposing upon them (which we kind of owe a lot of places, having totally devastated them for decades). If we have to take some steps across that spectrum rather than leaping the entire thing all at once in order to realistically get out of their hair without threatening the lives and well-being of the people who live there (potentially making things even worse than they were with us present), then yeah, I think that’s necessary. In some cases you can make a leap from a policy to the absence of a policy at once without catastrophic consequences (for instance, when we imposed brutal sanctions on Iraq or when we embargoed Cuba, afaik it only does good to eliminate the sanctions/embargo all at once)... But if there is very good reason to believe that our sudden cessation of action will allow mass atrocities, and wr’re just ceasing because it’s no longer geopolitically advantageous for us to continue military operations, then I do think it’s a more complicated case. The amount of shit Noam Chomsky has taken (particularly from tankies, who already hated him because he is critical of DPRK and Stalin) for articulating this is just incredible... I don’t think this should be a hot take to anyone who really is concerned about what will become of the people who actually live in the Rojava region.

@FanBeck You can easily convince a homeless man that the dog who went through and thin with them, who is their loyal companion, is worth fighting for and protecting.

So I'm going with B.

Animals are our comrades in our own struggle for liberation.

And I'm also going with A

Animals resist their oppression, and they seek our help when they can. They have revolutionary potential, not by themselves, but alongside with us.

Human and animal liberation will happen quicker as long as we seek to fight for both together.

starkinternational

I dont really think the vegan guy had the great arguments that some people are saying he did.

- he kept bringing up disabled people. Disabled people have always been considered expendable by institutions and the system and its gross to even talk about hypothetical eugenics to promote veganism
- he really tried to say a brain dead person is less than a fly, and then immediately walked it back and talked about the extrinsic suffering of the family of that person, showing that he still knows that there is a difference
- he brought up functioning labels talking about autism which the autistic community has repeatedly asked people not to do because it's used to treat nonverbal autistic people or autistic people with sensory sensitivity as lesser (which he literally did)

Now, Hasan's arguments were pretty weak, and I'm not saying that veganism is bad or anything. I'm just saying don't make shitty arguments for it.

I don't care if the argument is "hypothetical sentience", it's a bad argument. The reality is, we are one of the only creatures that kills their own species. Most of us don't like to do that. That's why in any hypothetical situation you're not going to kill a human. To even argue about these dumb scenarios that won't happen in a million years is ridiculous. Stop using disabled people as props for your bad arguments!!

Jay Middleton

I haven’t gotten that far in the video yet but there are lots of animals that kill their own species. It’s surprisingly common.

I don’t know what arguments he made were but generally the argument for veganism is:

We don’t need to consume animal products for health or nutrition. In fact, eating them can increase our risks of stroke, heart disease, and cancer. This makes eating animal products a case of taste, it’s satisfying our desire for pleasure.

Animals are sentient beings with the capacity to think, feel, and suffer. The way they are treated in animal agriculture is cruel and inhumane.

Considering we don’t need to eat them, this cruelty is ethically and morally unjustifiable. “Bacon tastes good” doesn’t justify inflicting unnecessary cruelty onto a sentient living being.

That’s not even taking into account the environmental argument - unless the west reduces its meat consumption by 90% there’s no way for us to meet our climate commitments. That’s just the fact of the matter.

Oppression is oppression, it’s not ok to engage in it just because it tastes good.

Hearing him say that his grandparents advised him to change his name to hide his muslim identity fucking broke my heart.

Colton Kemp

I know I’m late to the party here, but I couldn’t agree more. America absolutely has failed our own citizens and continue to fail our Muslim brothers and sisters and it’s ridiculously difficult for me to find out after so long of being trapped in conservative region

Danielle Corvid

research into humans shows we have always taken care of members of our family groups even if they couldn't "contribute". also, people with autism can absolutely contribute to society and help build it.

Mizz Infamous

Some say despite the downsides of autism that it’s the next step of human evolution since ppl with autism are often very smart. Sorry if I said a stereotype
