In Claire Keim's song La Mer, the lyrics portray the tumultuous and changing nature of the sea. The first stanza describes the sea as being in pain, and how it swallows up the surrounding landscape. The sea has changed its face a number of times as its shores have changed too. The second stanza talks about how the sea has receded into the distance and will only return the next day. The sea has drunk the toxic waste that is sold and thrown away, as well as other pollutants that floated along in its wake.
The chorus mentions that the sea is suffering and its storms no longer wash away its rage. The sea is in a bad mood, and this is a bad omen for the poor fishermen. The final stanza echoes the chorus, repeating that the sea will only return the next day. But when it does return, it will dance with beautiful ships and side-by-side with the abandoned pages. It will also dance with the veil of the poisoned foam.
Overall, La Mer is a song that touches on the theme of the changing nature of the sea, its beauty, and its dangers. The song suggests that the sea plays a significant role in shaping our world, and that we need to take care of it by being more responsible in our actions to prevent pollution and environmental damage.
