Aged 21, Claire formed a quartet which featured Jim Mullen on guitar and Jonathon Gee on piano. In 1991 Claire signed to the Linn label.
She achieved instant recognition with her debut album "The Waiting Game", which was chosen as one of the Times records of the year. 1994 saw Claire receive the Rising Star award at the British Jazz awards. By 1995 Claire had made three more critically acclaimed albums for Linn Records and made her American debut with four sell-out shows in Washington DC, receiving rave reviews from the Washington Post and The Village Voice.
Later that year Claire won the Best Vocalist Award at the British Jazz Awards and took her group to Ronnie Scott's Club to make her first live album titled "Offbeat".
In 2000 Claire started presenting the jazz magazine show "Jazz Line Up" for BBC Radio 3.
In July 2003 the third BBC Jazz Awards named Claire Vocalist of the Year.
"Talented and hip beyond her years.... the most exciting jazz star to soar to my attention in a decade" Rex Reed - The New York Observer.
A Song for You

I've sung a lot of songs, I've made some bad rhyme
I've acted out my life in stages
With ten thousand people watching
But we're alone now and I'm singin' this song for you
I know your image of me is what I hope to be, baby
I've treated you unkindly but girl can't you see
So darling can't you please see through me
'Cause we're alone now and I'm singin' my song for you
You taught me precious secrets of the truth, withholdin' nothin'
You came out in front and I was hiding
But now I'm so much better so if my words don't come together
Listen to the melody cause my love's in there hiding
I love you in a place where there's no space or time
I love you for my life, 'cause you're a friend of mine
And when my life is over, remember when we were together
We were alone and I was singin' my song for you
I love you in a place where there's no space or time
I've loved you for my life, yes, you're a friend of mine
And when my life is over, remember when we were together
We were alone and I was singin' my song for you, yes
We were alone and I was singin' this song for you, baby
We were alone and I was singin' my song,
Singin' my song, singin' my song, singin' my song
Singin' my song
" A Song For You" by Claire Martin is a beautiful love song that expresses the journey of the singer's life and the importance of her loved one in her life. The song starts with the singer talking about all the places she has been to and the songs she has sung. However, now, she is alone and singing this song for her beloved. She acknowledges that her image might not be exactly who she aspires to be, but she hopes that her lover sees through her and understands the true person she is.
As the song progresses, the singer conveys how her lover has helped her come out of her shell and bring out the best in her by being patient and understanding towards her. She mentions how despite her words not coming together at times, her love is found in the melody. The singer then declares her love for her beloved and how they have been friends who have gone through all the ups and downs of life together. She ends the song by reminding her lover that she will love them even after her life is over and all they will have is the memory of when they were alone, and she was singing this song for them.
Overall, the song truly captures the essence of love and how it helps one grow and evolve over time. The lyrics are powerful, and Martin's soothing voice adds a sense of vulnerability and longing to the song.
