Her overnight success might not come as a surprise to all, as Rosinkranz has been writing songs since she was 8. Filling notebooks and iPads with lyrics, turns of phrase, and poems, the homeschooled artist would spend hours writing lyrics to songs that didnโt exist yet. Sometimes, sheโd help her musician father, Ragnar, with melodies and lyrics for songs heโd been tasked to compose for TV shows and ad jingles.
Claire describes her style as alternative blues-pop, equally as inspired by early influences (like The Beatlesโ Help!, Frank Ocean, and the Jack Johnson songs the family would listen to around the house) as it is by the singer-songwriterโs contemporaries, like Benee, Bruno Major, and Still Woozy.
Claire traffics in lo-fi songs with intricate yet totally relatable lyrics about friendship, crushes, family, and feelings. They plumb the depths of the human condition in very short bursts, exposing the songwriterโs remarkable emotional maturity and strong, singular grasp on her sound. Narratively, tracks like โTough Guyโ and โSeriouslaaayโ follow Claireโs stories from start to finish while Ragnarโs clean, crisp production buoys his daughterโs crystal-clear vocals. โHe totally captures my vision and if I donโt like something, Iโm not afraid to say it,โ Claire says of her dad. โBecause weโre able to communicate so well, the process happens so quickly.โ
The โstar of the show,โ Claire says of her catalogue, is โBackyard Boy,โ the final song she wrote for the EP and one that grew legs of its own shortly after release, achieving massive viral success all on its own. โI was getting DMs from people telling me that โBackyard Boyโ was doing really well on TikTok,โ she remembers. โThen, friends started texting me. Then more people were texting me. So I opened TikTok and I had 300,000 videos under the song and realized, โOh, this is a thing!โ
Signing to slowplay/Republic Records in 2020, Claire realized the work and dedication sheโd been putting into music for half her life was coming to fruition. In August, she shot the โBackyard Boyโ music video but kept things close to the family, as sheโs done for years (itโs directed by her uncle, the first AD is her cousin, and close family friends star alongside her onscreen). โI think people are connecting to that song because itโs about a feeling you long for, especially during this time,โ she says. โEveryone wants to have this experience but itโs something we canโt have right now because of COVID. But โBackyard Boyโ makes you feel like you can.โ
Claire has spent a few years drilling down on her craft by refining her songwriting and learning to play instruments like the ukulele, the piano, and the jazz electric guitar (โthatโs the one I absolutely enjoy the most,โ she says), which have helped her turn her lyrics into fully imagined soundscapes. โI consider myself a writer first and foremost,โ sheโs quick to note. โIโm super fortunate to be able to sing all my songs, and I want to sing them, but writing is my favorite part of the entire process.โ

She's a wacky crazy lady
He's a rich, rich man
She moved to the state of California
With two kids in hand, oh
She's a superstar making money
Sunny dumby funny boy
Used him as her little toy
She's got her Beverly Hills boyfriend
Spending all his money
It's okay, he's got a lot
Spent a portion on my mom
Beverly Hills boyfriend
He's gone for the weekend
Doesn't care about his bills
Guess that's what life's like in the Hills
La-da-da, da-da-da
La-da-da, da-da-da-da-da-da, da, nah, nah
La-da-da, da-da-da
La-da-da, da-da-da-da-da-da, da, nah, nah
She's got funky little quirks
He is always gone at work now
She's living in royalty
Is she living in loyalty?
Now champagne is popping on Sundays
He's away and sipping on Bombay
Wasting bucks on beauty queens
Far away and can't be seen
She's got her Beverly Hills boyfriend
Spending all his money
It's okay, he's got a lot
Spent a portion on my mom
Beverly Hills boyfriend
He's gone for the weekend
Doesn't care about his bills
Guess that's what life's like in the Hills
La-da-da, da-da-da
La-da-da, da-da-da-da-da-da, da, nah, nah
(She's a superstar making money) La-da-da, da-da-da
(And she found a boy to call honey) Da-da-da, da-da-da-da-da-da, da, nah, nah
The lyrics of Claire Rosinkranz's song "Beverly Hills Boyfriend" depict a story of a woman who moves to California with her two kids and becomes a successful superstar while also being in a relationship with a wealthy man living in Beverly Hills. The opening lines suggest the woman, who is characterized as a "wacky crazy lady," persuades her lover to join her in the car. She says, "Get in the car, honey," indicating her dominance in the relationship.
The song then elaborates on the lifestyle of the couple. The woman is portrayed as someone who enjoys spending money and is taking advantage of her partner's wealth. While the man is always away at work, the woman spends his money on beauty queens and champagne, and she takes pride in having a rich boyfriend, flaunting his wealth. The chorus of the song emphasizes this, as she sings, "She's got her Beverly Hills boyfriend, spending all his money. It's okay; he's got a lot." However, the song also suggests that the man does not care about his bills and this behavior is typical of life in Beverly Hills.
Overall, "Beverly Hills Boyfriend" depicts an unbalanced relationship between a wealthy man and a superstar who uses him as her "little toy" for her own pleasure. The song is a commentary on the lifestyle of the rich and famous in which money is not a concern, and relationships are merely transactional.
