Her overnight success might not come as a surprise to all, as Rosinkranz has been writing songs since she was 8. Filling notebooks and iPads with lyrics, turns of phrase, and poems, the homeschooled artist would spend hours writing lyrics to songs that didnโt exist yet. Sometimes, sheโd help her musician father, Ragnar, with melodies and lyrics for songs heโd been tasked to compose for TV shows and ad jingles.
Claire describes her style as alternative blues-pop, equally as inspired by early influences (like The Beatlesโ Help!, Frank Ocean, and the Jack Johnson songs the family would listen to around the house) as it is by the singer-songwriterโs contemporaries, like Benee, Bruno Major, and Still Woozy.
Claire traffics in lo-fi songs with intricate yet totally relatable lyrics about friendship, crushes, family, and feelings. They plumb the depths of the human condition in very short bursts, exposing the songwriterโs remarkable emotional maturity and strong, singular grasp on her sound. Narratively, tracks like โTough Guyโ and โSeriouslaaayโ follow Claireโs stories from start to finish while Ragnarโs clean, crisp production buoys his daughterโs crystal-clear vocals. โHe totally captures my vision and if I donโt like something, Iโm not afraid to say it,โ Claire says of her dad. โBecause weโre able to communicate so well, the process happens so quickly.โ
The โstar of the show,โ Claire says of her catalogue, is โBackyard Boy,โ the final song she wrote for the EP and one that grew legs of its own shortly after release, achieving massive viral success all on its own. โI was getting DMs from people telling me that โBackyard Boyโ was doing really well on TikTok,โ she remembers. โThen, friends started texting me. Then more people were texting me. So I opened TikTok and I had 300,000 videos under the song and realized, โOh, this is a thing!โ
Signing to slowplay/Republic Records in 2020, Claire realized the work and dedication sheโd been putting into music for half her life was coming to fruition. In August, she shot the โBackyard Boyโ music video but kept things close to the family, as sheโs done for years (itโs directed by her uncle, the first AD is her cousin, and close family friends star alongside her onscreen). โI think people are connecting to that song because itโs about a feeling you long for, especially during this time,โ she says. โEveryone wants to have this experience but itโs something we canโt have right now because of COVID. But โBackyard Boyโ makes you feel like you can.โ
Claire has spent a few years drilling down on her craft by refining her songwriting and learning to play instruments like the ukulele, the piano, and the jazz electric guitar (โthatโs the one I absolutely enjoy the most,โ she says), which have helped her turn her lyrics into fully imagined soundscapes. โI consider myself a writer first and foremost,โ sheโs quick to note. โIโm super fortunate to be able to sing all my songs, and I want to sing them, but writing is my favorite part of the entire process.โ

Somewhere no way of knowing, outside everyone's smoking
I grab my coffee at eleven
People watching's an obsession
And I watch the man who's in a rush
The mom who tells her baby hush
The couple who makes each other blush
The couple who makes each other blush
Aah, mmh
Ooh, ooh
Buckling seatbelts, skies like pink milk, flying from my problems
When I come home I'll solve 'em, running from hearts of solemn
I watch the clouds glow through my window
Buzzing music in my headphones, and I see a boy across the aisle
The people who never seem to smile
Together we're all just going miles
Together we're all just going miles
And I'll never see them again but here I am
Yeah, I'll never see them again but here I am
Ta ta ta da
Ta ta ta da
Ra ta ra ta ra ra ra ra da da
Ra ta ra ra ra ra ra ra da da da da
Ten PM, LAX, black sweats, everybody's going
Somewhere no way of knowing, outside everyone's smoking
I grab my coffee at eleven
People watching is an obsession
And I watch the man who's in a rush
The mom who tells her baby hush
The couple who makes each other blush
The couple who makes each other blush
The lyrics of Claire Rosinkranz's song "LAX" depict an introspective observation of people and their emotions at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) during the late evening. The scene is set with the mention of the time and location, creating a sense of anonymity and anticipation. Everyone at the airport is heading somewhere, but their destinations remain unknown.
The mention of "black sweats" implies a casual and relaxed atmosphere, where people are comfortable in their casual attire. The line "outside everyone's smoking" suggests that individuals are taking a break, possibly seeking some sort of relief or escape from the hectic nature of travel. These details give a glimpse into the various experiences and perspectives of the people at the airport.
Through the eyes of the singer, people-watching becomes an obsession. The observer notices different individuals and their interactions with each other. The man in a rush, the mom trying to pacify her baby, and the couple blushing in each other's presence all catch the singer's attention. This illustrates the range of emotions and connections people experience even in a busy and transient environment like an airport.
The repetition of the phrase "Aah, aah ah ah, Aah, mmh, Ooh, ooh" suggests a contemplative and melodic interlude, perhaps symbolizing the singer's own introspective thoughts and feelings. It also adds a dream-like quality to the song, allowing the listener to immerse themselves in the atmosphere of the airport.
The second verse introduces the act of flying and the metaphorical escape it provides. The singer mentions "skies like pink milk" to describe the beautiful and serene view from the airplane. This line reflects a sense of seeking solace and a temporary reprieve from life's problems. The mention of solving problems upon returning home indicates a determination to confront and overcome challenges.
As the singer looks out the window, they observe people on the airplane who, like themselves, are on a journey. The use of the phrase "the people who never seem to smile" may suggest individuals burdened with their own worries or troubles. However, the line "together we're all just going miles" emphasizes the collective experience of travel, highlighting the shared humanity and interconnectedness of people in their individual journeys.
The repetition of "I'll never see them again but here I am" conveys a bittersweet realization that these fleeting encounters and connections with strangers will never be repeated. It underscores the transient nature of the airport, where people come and go, and emphasizes the significance of living in the present moment and cherishing the fleeting connections made in passing.
In summary, Claire Rosinkranz's "LAX" depicts the observations and reflections of people at an airport, highlighting their emotions, connections, and the shared experience of travel. The lyrics encourage listeners to appreciate the fleeting moments and connections we encounter in life, emphasizing the importance of embracing the present and finding solace amidst the chaos and transience of the world around us.

This entire EP shows how beautiful, talented and out of this world Claire is! This song and hotel especially are the two songs that made me fall even more in love with her music and her as a whole! This girl is beyond talented and it hurts to see that after the "backyard boy" era, some people just left and probably forgot about her, but she has evolved so much since that and this "6 of a billion" ep is so so so amazing and I know that everyone for a fact can tell she put so much work in it and seeing that it's not doing as well as it deserves to be doing, hurts, but I'm so positive that soon she'll get the recognition she truly deserves because this album is absolutely spectacular and deserves what so many other albums are getting! WONDERFUL JOB CLAIRE!!! โฅโฅ๐๐พ๐๐พ๐๐พ๐ฅบ๐๐พ๐๐พ

Claire, I'm in LAX Airport while listening to this. I have a flight at 11 something and it's almost 10. Thank you for writing this song. I listen to it a lot in the Philippines and I'm going to take a flight back to that country tonight. I'm glad that I get to be in the airport that you are singing about.
