Their self-titled 1995 début has been followed by two more studio albums. Each has introduced fresh new sounds and styling, something that has successfully kept them from being pigeon-holed in one genre.
Victoria Lloyd provides consistently powerful, but gentle and ethereal vocals, and haunting and enigmatic lyrics, Ben Fargen's clean and bright guitars, and Chris Ross's lush keyboards all give the band their own distinct and unique style. They are currently signed to Metropolis Records, and released their long-awaited fourth album, Lustre, in September of 2009.
The band seems to be on hiatus since July 2010.
Mercy
Claire Voyant Lyrics

I am playing in the darkness of warm July
Tryst between the scenes not happy,
As it seems you play with forgiveness
For wicked schemes
I know years ago
I know nowâ?¦
You play like some god
Clean before the stream to innocence you cling
The beauty in the crime is you don't feel; a thing
Scars we wore years ago hurt now
You seemed like some devil
And you prayed like you were god
These roses form a ring around your cell
In these ashes
We all fall down
Hold on to the divine we'll all fall down.
Stars I wished on years ago burnt out
You seemed like some devil
You played like some god
These roses form a ring around our selves in the ashes we all fall down
Hold on to the divine we'll all fall down.
The lyrics of Claire Voyant's song "Mercy" depict a sense of reflection and introspection. The first stanza describes a break from reality to take a rest, within the darkness of warm July, which could be seen as a metaphor for a darker period or time in their life. The second stanza references forgiveness despite the wicked schemes, indicating perhaps a realization of past mistakes and desire for absolution. The third stanza speaks to a desire to return to a sense of innocence or purity despite the scars of past experiences. The final stanza ties everything together, acknowledging that we all fall down at times, but we must hold onto something divine to lift ourselves back up.
The song itself is a mix of ethereal synth and hypnotic beat, giving the lyrics a dreamy and haunting quality. "Mercy" is a standout track on Claire Voyant's 2002 album Time and the Maiden, and showcases the band's unique style of blending genres such as electronic, gothic, and trip-hop. One interesting fact about the band is that they originally formed in 1995 as a collaboration between keyboardist Chris Ross and singer Victoria Lloyd, who were both members of the group The Shroud. Additionally, Victoria Lloyd has been compared to other notable vocalists such as Sinead O'Connor and Kate Bush.
