Far Over the Misty Mountains Cold
Clamavi De Profundis Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Far over the Misty Mountains cold,
To dungeons deep and caverns old,
We must away, ere break of day,
To seek our pale enchanted gold.

The dwarves of yore made mighty spells,
While hammers fell like ringing bells,
In places deep, where dark things sleep,
In hollow halls beneath the fells.

For ancient king and elvish lord
There many a gleaming golden hoard
They shaped and wrought, and light they caught,
To hide in gems on hilt of sword.

On silver necklaces they strung
The flowering stars, on crowns they hung
The dragon-fire, on twisted wire
They meshed the light of moon and sun.

Far over the Misty Mountains cold,
To dungeons deep and caverns old,
We must away, ere break of day,
To claim our long-forgotten gold.

Goblets they carved there for themselves,
And harps of gold, where no man delves
There lay they long, and many a song
Was sung unheard by men or elves.

The pines were roaring on the heights,
The wind was moaning in the night,
The fire was red, it flaming spread,
The trees like torches blazed with light.

The bells were ringing in the dale,
And men looked up with faces pale.
The dragon's ire, more fierce than fire,
Laid low their towers and houses frail.

The mountain smoked beneath the moon.
The dwarves, they heard the tramp of doom.
They fled the hall to dying fall
Beneath his feet, beneath the moon.

Far over the Misty Mountains grim,
To dungeons deep and caverns dim,

We must away, ere break of day,
To win our harps and gold from him!

Overall Meaning

The song 'Far Over the Misty Mountains Cold' by Clamavi De Profundis is a beautiful portrayal of a group of dwarves who plan to venture into the treacherous mountains to reclaim their long-forgotten treasure. The lyrics begin by describing the harsh landscape of the mountains and the deep dungeons and caverns where the group of dwarves must venture. The group is hopeful in their pursuit of their enchanted gold, and they must make their way before sunrise.

Moving on, the lyrics speak of the mighty spells and hammers of the dwarves, who created impressive halls and hoards of gleaming gold. They then set out to hide their treasure in gems and necklaces and fashioned crowns, using the light of the moon and the sun. The group, determined to reclaim their lost treasure, must navigate the harsh and perilous mountains in search of their gold and gems.

The song further portrays the dwarves as being skilled craftsmen who fashioned goblets of gold and harps for themselves, which they kept in hidden halls. There they sang unheard songs that were unknown to men and elves. The lyrics are also haunting, as they describe the roaring pines, the moaning winds, and the flaming fire that spread through the trees like torches.

What I loved the most from this version is the new approach to the fragment:

"The wind was on the withered heath but in the forest stirred no leaf
-There shadows lay by night or day and dark thing silent crept beneath.
-The wind came down the mountains cold and like a tide it roared and rolled.
-The branches groaned, the forest moaned and leaves were laid upon the mould"

Also liked the addition of the little fragments from The King Beneath the Mountains

From my perspective it feels a lot more rhythmical (some parts if not all the song). I spent around an hour getting used to the new format, for I had the old one stuck in my head from years of singing it.

Please share this piece with your friends and family to see if they spontaneously turn into a Dwarf (symptoms include digging holes, aversion to leaves, suddenly sporting an epic beard, general shortness, and compulsively streaming “Misty Mountains” on repeat) We hope you enjoy it:)

@LeeroyPorkins

Rankin/Bass Hobbit has a sequel to this song. Never mind lol
