Lament for Boromir
Clamavi De Profundis Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

They will look for him from the White Tower
But he will not return
From mountain
Or from sea

Through Rohan over fen and field
Where the long grass grows
The West Wind comes walking
And about the walls it goes

What news from the West, O wandering wind, do you bring to me tonight?
Have you seen Boromir the Tall, by moon or by starlight?

I saw him ride over seven streams, over waters wide and grey
I saw him walk in empty lands until he passed away
Into the shadows of the North,
I saw him then no more

The North Wind may have heard the horn of the son of Denethor

O Boromir! From the high walls westward I looked afar
But you came not from the empty lands where no men are

From the mouths of the Sea the South Wind flies
From the sandhills and the stones
The wailing of the gulls it bears
And at the gate it moans

What news from the South, O sighing wind, do you bring to me at eve?
Where now is Boromir the Fair? He tarries and I grieve

Ask not of me where he doth dwell so many bones there lie
On the white shores and the dark shores under the stormy sky
So many have passed down Anduin to find the flowing Sea
Ask of the North Wind news of them the North Wind sends to me!

O Boromir! Beyond the gate the seaward road runs south
But you came not with the wailing gulls from the grey sea's mouth

From the Gate of Kings the North Wind rides
And past the roaring falls
And clear and cold about the tower its loud horn calls

What news from the North, O mighty wind
Do you bring to me today?
What news of Boromir the Bold? For he is long away

Beneath Amon Hen I heard his cry
There many foes he fought

His cloven shield, his broken sword
They to the water brought

His head so proud, his face so fair
His limbs they laid to rest

And Rauros, golden Rauros-falls
Bore him upon its breast

O Boromir! The Tower of Guard shall ever northward gaze
To Rauros, golden Rauros-falls, until the end of days

Overall Meaning

The song "Lament for Boromir" by Clamavi De Profundis mourns the loss of the notable character Boromir from J.R.R. Tolkien's "The Lord of the Rings." The opening lines of the song express the futility of expecting Boromir's return by stating that although people may search for him from the White Tower, he will not come back, whether from the mountain or the sea. The next few lines describe the journey of the West Wind through the grasslands of Rohan and past the walls. The song then turns into a dialogue between the singer and various winds, asking if they have seen Boromir. The North Wind responds that it may have heard his horn, and the South Wind speaks of the sea and the wailing gulls. Finally, the song tells of Boromir's valiant final stand and his eventual passing in the golden Rauros-falls.

The lyrics of "Lament for Boromir" paint a vivid picture of the aftermath of Boromir's disappearance, particularly via powerful imagery of natural phenomena such as the winds and the golden Rauros-falls. The winds' responses - the North Wind's mention of Boromir's horn and the South Wind's mention of the wailing gulls - suggest that Boromir has indeed gone to another land, and the final lines of the song suggest that his memory will be forever remembered and celebrated. In summary, the song laments the loss of a brave and honorable warrior in a world of great peril.

O'er the Dark Lord's lands the East Wind roars, though Gondor heeds it not,
Its voice is iron, its mouth is flame, its odors reek and rot.
'What tidings of the East, O deathly wind, do you bring me from the Dark?
Gondor asks after Boromir, but to you I alone shall hark.
'Has Mordor taken this strong man, for the Dark Lord to have his way,
Where shadows lie upon the land, and night has vanquished day?
Nay, for he refused 'till his end came, though the Night will soon take all,
By the hordes of the Orcs this fool was slain, for he heeds not Mairon's call.'
O Boromir! Behind the Black Gate, armies muster great and strong,
But still you would fight 'neath the banners of Light 'till the final rays are gone.’

Thus did Boromir fall.
Captain of Gondor, Loyal son of a failing city, heir of a crumbling Kingdom.
Yet Boromir's heart was strong, as was his love for Gondor, for he was a True Son.
Sent on a hopeless quest, lead by an ancient leader to destroy the enemies ancient weapon.
Met by a Witch with a piercing eye, which laid bare his heart.
Fear. Despair. A hopeless dread that none could stand against the Shadow.
Yet a Mighty heart had Boromir, Son of the White Tower.
A mighty heart could not protect him from the Enemy's Power.
The Ring...Turned his Love of Gondor....to Madness.
To redeem that madness, he fought with shield and sword to protect the Little Ones.
Foe he struck down, again and again.
Yet no sword could save him from the black arrows, nor could his cloven shield.
And so did Boromir the Fair journey across the sea to join his Kin.

"Be at peace...Son of Gondor"

I know this sounds like an odd question. I am a big fan of your work! I also play a game called Lord of the Rings Online. In it you can play music in character. I would love to be able to play your song in gane. That being said I would really like to know what notes/pitch you use for the voices in the song. I have been trying to match it by ear but it isn't the easiest thing to do. Again, I really appreciate your work and look forward to hearing more in the future!

A lot of people mock Boromir, in the movies especially, but those people project themselves as perfect and incorruptible. Boromir is the only human to me in the fellowship, as Aragorn spent most his extended life with elves and the Dunedain rangers. Boromir has fought on the front lines his whole life, thrust into a leadership role that wasn’t destined for him. You see his love for his country and people, and it’s painful to see his great strength and heart fail.

@Poopenheiner

I totally agree. That’s why I’m almost moved to tears when I see him tear through the forest to get to the hobbits when the orcs attack. He has to fail because that’s the only way he can be redeemed. And he does redeem himself and in the end he’s better than he was before he fell. That’s what makes it so beautiful to me. That’s where his true strength and heart shows itself. His ability to get back up is so inspiring.

@damianrehbein3992

He is Humanity in person.

Brave, strong, beliving he does good and meaning so but filled with Hybris.

Humanity, and men in particuler, cannot rise above themselves with out the humiliation of falling, failing, and defeat. The bitterness of being crushed is when we discover if we are clay that shatters, or gold refined.
