I'M A MAN
Clapton - Beck - Page Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I'm waiting for my man
Got twenty-six dollars in my hand
Up to Lexington, 125
Feel sick and dirty, more dead than alive
I'm waiting for my man

Up to a Brownstone, up three flights of stairs
Everybody's pinned and nobody cares
Pardon me sir, it's the furthest from my mind
I'm just waitin' for a dear, dear friend of mine

I'm waiting for my man (waiting, waiting for my man)
I'm waiting for my man (waiting, waiting for my man)
(Waiting, waiting for my man)

Here he comes, he's all dressed in black
Pr shoes and a big straw hat
He's never early, he's always late
First thing you learn is you always got to wait
I'm waiting for my man

Hey baby, don't you holler, darlin' don't you bawl and shout
I'm feeling good, I'm gonna work it on out
I'm feeling good, I'm feeling so fine
Until tomorrow, it's just some other time
I'm waiting for my man

(Waiting) I'm waiting for my man (waiting)
I'm waiting for my man (waiting, waiting for my man)
(Waiting) I'm waiting for my man

(Waiting, waiting for my man)
(Waiting) I'm waiting for my man
(Waiting) I'm waiting for my man
(Waiting) I'm waiting for my man

(Waiting) I'm waiting for my man
(Waiting, waiting for my man)

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to I'm A Man by Clapton Beck Page are simple yet powerful with the repetition of the phrase "I spell M-A-N, man," indicating a sense of pride in one's masculinity and adulthood. The opening lines "You pretty women, Standing in line, Make love to babe, In my own time," could be interpreted as the singer's confidence in his ability to attract and please women on his own terms, without feeling pressured to conform to society's expectations. The following line "Cause I'm a man, Turned twenty one," could indicate a sense of newfound freedom and autonomy that comes with reaching legal adulthood, where the singer is able to assert himself confidently.

The line "Don't back down, To Kansas too, Bring back a pretty girl, Just like you" provides an interesting element to the lyrics as it takes on a literal interpretation, suggesting the singer's willingness to venture beyond his comfort zone and perhaps explore the unknown. However, it could also be interpreted metaphorically as a challenge to himself to not give in to fear or societal norms, and to seek out experiences and people that will push him out of his comfort zone.

Overall, the lyrics to I'm A Man convey a sense of pride and self-assuredness in one's identity, while also hinting at a desire for adventure and experience.

I drove 7 hrs to see them in Dallas then drove back home showered and clocked in, worked my 8 hrs. No one had a clue. To be young again, now I can barely make to general dollar and back lol. As a senior I tank the Lord everyday, that I can get to play my instruments. God bless all my rockers.

Amazing to see these three guitar legends who were all part of the Yardbirds in the 1960s and all three on the top 5 list of best guitarists in the world. Awesome to see one of my favorite drummers in the world Charlie Watts and Bill Wyman, bassist both from the Rolling Stones there as well. RIP Charlie Watts and Jeff Beck - you gave decades of pleasure to millions of fans around the world.

This is actually the very end of an approximately 3 hour show. It was called the ARMS benefit (Action for Research into Muscular Sclerosis). They only played four cities (Dallas, San Francisco, LA & NY, NY) in the United States and I was at the first show in Dallas😎. The lineup was: on drums, Charlie Watts, Kenny Jones, Simon Phillips and Ray Cooper. On bass, Bill Wyman and Fernando Saunders. On keyboards, Jan Hammer, Andy Fairweather Lowe, Chris Stainton and James Hooker. Vocals were covered by Joe Cocker, Paul Rodgers, Ronnie Lane, Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck and Andy Fairweather Lowe. The guitarists were Jimmy Page Jeff Beck Eric Clapton, Paul Rodgers and Andy Fairweather Lowe...

It was a show for the ages and one I will definitely never forget!!!
