A researcher of Brazilian popular music, its rhythms and folklore, she has also traveled to many countries representing the Brazilian culture. A connoisseur of African music, dance, traditions, and religions, she converted to Candomblé and took Afro-Brazilian culture into her songs and costumes. She was one of the singers who recorded the most songs by the composers of Portela, her favorite samba school. She was also the first female Brazilian singer to sell more than one hundred thousand records, breaking a taboo according to which women did not sell records in Brazil. During her whole career she sold four million four hundred thousand records. She was considered by Rolling Stone magazine as the ninth greatest Brazilian voice and, by the same magazine, the fifty-first greatest Brazilian artist of all time.
On April 2, 1983, she died at age 40, after suffering from anaphylaxis during a surgery to treat varicose veins. Even today she remains one of the most popular singers in Brazil.
Ai Quem Me Dera
Clara Nunes Lyrics

Ai quem me dera ver morrer a fera
Ver nascer o anjo, ver brotar a flor
Ai quem me dera uma manhã feliz
Ahh se as pessoas se tornassem boas
E cantassem moas e tivessem paz
E pelas ruas se abraçassem nuas
E duas a duas fossem ser casais
Ai quem me dera ao som de madrigais
Ver todo mundo para sempre afim
E a liberdade nunca ser demais
E não haver mais solidão ruim
Ai quem me dera ouvir um nunca mais
Ai quem me dera ouvir um nunca mais
The song "Ai Quem Me Dera" by Clara Nunes is a wistful lament about the singer's longing for a better world. The first stanza expresses a desire for an end to waiting and a return to a simpler time, symbolized by the image of a never-ending song. The second stanza expands on this theme, with the singer wishing for the defeat of the beast (presumably representing evil), the birth of the angel (perhaps representing goodness or hope), and the blooming of a flower (possibly representing beauty or joy). The third stanza imagines a world where people are good and peaceful, and able to express love openly and freely. The fourth stanza reiterates these longings, with the singer yearning for a world where everyone is united and free, and there is no more loneliness.
Overall, the song expresses a profound sense of yearning for a better world, one that is free from the pain and suffering of the present. The poetic language and rich imagery add to the emotional impact of the lyrics, making "Ai Quem Me Dera" a beautiful and poignant song.
