El Paso
Clare Dunn Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

You were fire with amarillo eyes
And I was free as Colorado skies
Out where the outlaws used to ride
Sage in the sand and the air is dry
And we were wild like the desert wind
And never thought about the consequence
Running headlong off into the night
Getting lost in the border town lines

Drinking margaritas and tequila at the L & J
Singing right along with the mariachi
Shining like the stars on the Rio Grande
Drifting away in a long slow dance
At Rosa's cantina half a world away
I was falling in love with
You and you with me
Heaven was a long way away, I know
But with you, yeah, it sure felt close
In El Paso el Paso, yeah
In El Paso

A memory that time will never steal
I hope you know that every time I feel
A little heat in the breeze
Of the midnight air
I can still see us back then

Drinking margaritas and tequila at the L & J
Singing right along with the mariachi
Shining like the stars on the Rio Grande
Drifting away in a long slow dance
At Rosa's cantina half a world away
I was falling in love with
You and you with me
Heaven was a long way away, I know
But with you, yeah, it sure felt close
In El Paso el Paso, yeah
In El Paso

In a dusty corner of the world
Time stood still
It wasn't paradise or perfect
But baby, it sure felt real

Drinking margaritas and tequila at the L & J
Singing right along with the mariachi
Shining like the stars on the Rio Grande
Drifting away in a long slow dance
At Rosa's cantina half a world away
I was falling in love with
You and you with me
Heaven was a long way away, I know
But with you, yeah, it sure felt close

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Clare Dunn's song "El Paso" depict a passionate love story set in the desert landscapes of El Paso. The song begins by describing the intense attraction between the singer and their lover, using vivid imagery like "fire with amarillo eyes" and comparing their freedom to the open skies of Colorado. They feel a connection to the wildness of the desert, embracing a reckless abandon and not considering the consequences of their actions. The border town lines symbolize a sense of adventure and escape.

The next part of the song highlights the couple's enjoyment of the local culture and nightlife in El Paso. They are depicted drinking margaritas and tequila at the L & J, a popular establishment, and singing along with the mariachi music. This experience is described as being as radiant as the stars on the Rio Grande and as enchanting as a slow dance. The distance from Rosa's cantina, another notable location in El Paso, implies that their love transcends geographical boundaries.

The third part of the song reflects upon the lasting impact of their time together. The memories they created in El Paso are presented as something that time cannot diminish. The singer cherishes the sensation of warmth in the midnight air, which takes them back to their blissful moments with their lover.

The final section of the song acknowledges that El Paso may not have been a perfect paradise, but it felt real and significant to the singers. In this dusty corner of the world, time seemed to stand still as they indulged in their love affair. The repetition of the earlier description of their experiences, including drinking margaritas, singing with the mariachi, and dancing, reinforces the profound impact these moments had on their relationship.

Overall, the lyrics of "El Paso" speak of a passionate and memorable love affair in the desert town of El Paso. The imagery and details paint a picture of wildness, freedom, and a connection that surpasses physical boundaries. El Paso represents a place where their love felt close to heaven, even though it was far away.

BEAUTIFUL SONG! El Paso strong! I have lived in Phoenix, San Antonio, and San Diego, and I have traveled worldwide. "El Paso is not paradise or is perfect, but it is HOME!" What makes El Paso unique and special is the people and the community. No matter what color you are, white, brown, black, everyone comes together as a community. You will find the most loving people in El Paso. If you don't believe me, go to El Paso, and people will go out of their way to help you or assist you. Also, everywhere you go, the people will greet you with a big smile. Clare mentions the drinking Tequila and margaritas in the L&J. Well, in case you don't know it. L& J is my wife's and my favorite Mexican restaurant. Also, L&J won the best Mexican restaurant in Texas and is a favorite spot for famous people to stop by, such as Martha Steward, Sam Elliot, Oscar de la Hoya, etc. If you stop in El Paso, you need to visit the L& J restaurant. El Paso will always be in my heart. EL PASO STRONG!!!!
