Elizabeth Taylor
Clare Maguire Lyrics

I feel like Elizabeth Taylor
This could be a movie
I feel like Elizabeth Taylor
Red lips, dark hair
Alone in my trailer
Under my white shirt
Heart like stone
Wearing fake designer and pearls

I've loved, I've lost and loved again
But here I am, on my own

I feel like Elizabeth Taylor
"Do I make you nervous?"
I feel like Elizabeth Taylor
And not just on the surface

I've loved, I've lost and loved again
But here I am, here I stand
I've loved, I've lost and loved again
But here I am

Another lesson learned
Another lesson learned

I feel like Elizabeth Taylor
At the after party
In a room full of strangers
Just me and my Bacardi

Thinking of an old movie
And the roles that we play
Sometimes I look back
And I wish that you'd stayed

I've loved, I've lost and loved again
But here I am on my own
I've loved, I've lost and loved again
But here I am, here I stand
I've loved, I've lost and loved again
But here I am

Another lesson learned

Ooooh, ooh, ooh
Red lips, dark hair
Oooh, ooh, oh
"Do I make you nervous?"

It's another lesson learned
Another lesson learned
Another lesson learned

I've loved, I've lost and loved again
But here I am, here I stand
I've loved, I've lost and loved again
But here I am

Another lesson learned
No one could tame me
Another lesson learned
No one could tame me

Another lesson learned
Another lesson learned

Overall Meaning

The song "Elizabeth Taylor" by Clare Maguire is a powerful ballad that explores the theme of vulnerability and strength. In the first verse, the singer confesses that she feels like Elizabeth Taylor, the iconic actress who is known for her beauty, talent, and stormy personal life. This comparison highlights the singer's conflicting emotions - on the one hand, she is confident and glamorous, but on the other hand, she is lonely and broken-hearted. She describes herself as being alone in her trailer, wearing fake designer clothes and pearls, suggesting that her outer appearance is a facade that hides her true feelings. The line "heart like stone" indicates that she has been hurt so many times that she has become emotionally numb. The chorus repeats the phrase "I've loved, I've lost, and loved again", emphasizing that the singer has been through a lot of ups and downs in her personal relationships. However, she is resilient and determined to keep going, even when things get tough.

In the second verse, the singer continues to compare herself to Elizabeth Taylor, but this time she imagines herself at an after-party, drinking Bacardi and feeling nostalgic. She remembers an old movie and thinks about the roles that people play in life. The line "I wish that you'd stayed" suggests that she is thinking about a past love who has left her, leaving her feeling abandoned and alone. The final chorus repeats the phrase "another lesson learned", implying that the singer has gained wisdom and experience from her past struggles.

Overall, the song "Elizabeth Taylor" is a poignant reflection on the struggle to find love and happiness in a world that can be cruel and unforgiving. The comparison to Elizabeth Taylor adds a layer of glamour and drama to the lyrics, but ultimately the song is about the universal experience of heartbreak and resilience.

I met Clare after her concert on Monday. She handed out cans of beer to us and got us up on stage dancing with her! She's really funny too, she waited around for photos and autographs with everyone. Her vocals are truly astonishing live, I was in awe!
