Mother
Clarence Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

The worst person I know, mother-in-law, mother-in-law
She worries me so, mother-in-law,mother-in-law
If she leaves us alone, we would have a happy home
Sent down from below
Mother-in-law, mother-in-law, mother-in-law, mother-in-law

Sin should be her name, mother-in-law, mother-in-law
To me, they're about the same, mother-in-law, mother-in-law
Every time I open my mouth, she steps in, tries to put me out
How could she stoop so low?
Mother-in-law, mother-in-law, mother-in-law, mother-in-law

I come home with my pay, mother-in-law, mother-in-law
She asks me what I make, mother-in-law, mother-in-law
She thinks her advice is a contribution
But if she will leave that will be a solution
And don't come back no more
Mother-in-law, mother-in-law, mother-in-law, mother-in-law

Sin should be her name, mother-in-law, mother-in-law
To me, they're about the same, mother-in-law, mother-in-law
Every time I open my mouth, she steps in, tries to put me out

How could she stoop so low?
Mother-in-law, mother-in-law, mother-in-law, mother-in-law

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Clarence White's song "Mother-In-Law" express the frustration of a man with his obnoxious and interfering mother-in-law. The first few verses set a negative tone by describing the mother-in-law as the "worst person" the singer knows and someone who "worries" him so much. He believes that their home would be happier if she were to leave them alone. The lyrics then take an even darker turn, as the singer suggests that the mother-in-law is so terrible that "sin should be her name." He also reveals that every time he speaks, she tries to "put him out," indicating that she is controlling and dominant. Despite his anger, the singer indicates that the mother-in-law thinks she is being helpful and offering advice, when in reality, she is just causing more problems. The song ends with the singer wishing that she would leave and never come back.

The lyrics of this humorous song reveal a common theme in popular culture- the difficulty of dealing with difficult in-laws. However, the song also points to a larger problem of people who are controlling and try to exert their influence over others.
