let's cool one
Clark Terry & Thelonious Monk Lyrics

It was the sweetest melody
I know I lost heaven 'cause you were the song
Since you and I have drifted apart
Life doesn't mean a thing to me
Please come back, sweet music, I know I was wrong
You know that we were meant to be more than just friends, just friends
I let a song go out of my heart
Believe me, darlin', when I say
I won't know sweet music until you return some day
I let a song go out of my heart
Believe me, darlin', when I say
I won't know sweet music until you return some day
The lyrics of "Let's Cool One", a song by Clark Terry Quartet/Monk/Thelonious Monk, is not related to "I let a song go out of my heart," which is a song originally recorded by Duke Ellington in 1938. Nonetheless, the lyrics conveys a strong message of regret and loss due to separation from someone special. In the first verse, the singer laments losing the most beautiful and important thing in their life, which is the person symbolized as a sweet melody, something that brings joy and pleasure. The singer realizes that without that person, they lost their joy, and nothing else feels meaningful anymore. In the second verse, the singer acknowledges their mistake, apologizes, and asks for a second chance. The singer says they are willing to amend their mistake and shows a desire to be more than just friends. In the last verse, the singer begs the person to come back and states that they won't experience true happiness and joy, represented by sweet music, without them.

Based on this solo by Philly Joe, I'd have to say this was his peak year (1958), before the junk prevented him from playing in such a swinging, very clean, totally inventive technique using rudiments like never before or since. He continued to play similar phrases, but as the years passed, he seems to have lost this stream of conciousness and creativity. His feels was always there (Bill Evans years) but it was not the same.
