@Haste Kulvaati " There is a lot of popular science that is frankly superior to Clarke’s rather trashy TV output from the 1970's and 80's." 😆

Wow.

You clearly have no idea whom you're talking about on the smallest level if you're now attempting to reduce Clarke even further to just his TV appearances from the '70s and '80s instead of his award-winning literary work of over 50 books dating back to the 1950s and spanning over several decades.

And more importantly, all that those works led to.

His authorship in science fiction was so outstanding they even named an award after him which is given annually to anoint the best science fiction author to this day.

Furthermore, countless scientists, astronomers, astrophysicists, astronauts, computer and space engineers, etc. have directly cited Arthur C. Clarke as their inspiration for pursuing their respective fields.

Space exploration itself in large part was inspired by him. So everything from the moon landing, the exploration of Mars, images of distant galaxies and celestial bodies from space telescopes you see today, and space satellites which make possible a lot of the technology (like tv, radio, the internet, etc.) that you and billions of people across the world rely on the most today, spawned from his work.

And we're just now in 2023, at the very dawn of the AI capabilities Arthur wrote about in the 1960s.

As incredible as that alone is, Clarke's far-reaching impact didn't just stop there as George Lucas stated that Star Wars was partly inspired by " 2001: A Space Odyssey " which was adapted from Clarke's book of the same name.

And of course, much like Arthur and his work, the 2001 A Space Odyssey film itself was completely groundbreaking. And highly decorated having won the Academy, BAFTA, and 3 Hugo awards. The film also cemented Stanely Kubrick as one of the most seminal directors in cinematic history.

And if you think Clarke's impact on film, science, and the literary arts just stops there, you still aren't listening.

But I would expect that from a youtube commenting genius who actually thinks that Arthur C. Clarke is just some old '70s and '80s hack on TV.

Welcome to today's lesson on how absurd that assertion is and couldn't be further from the truth because of such the significant role he played in advancing human civilization in reaching toward the stars. Both literally and figuratively. And in science, technology, space exploration, cinema, literature, and our imaginations.

Tomorrow we'll learn how some internet know-nothings regress civilization. And do the opposite of all of those.

Thanks for proving my initial point so convincingly and resoundingly Haste. On your way now.

I think that in a way he was "right" about the servants conceptually but wrong practically,
the error coming from him missing the field of Robotics.
In a way it is kind of funny how he probably makes the error because he falls into the very trap he warns about himself,
that if the theory feels to plausible it is probably wrong,
as modified animal servants at the time probably was very much more believable than the concept of robots.

No need to have a chimp cut the grass or vacuum your home when you can have a robot do it.
Same goes for transportation, manufacturing and organization.
Animals are just way to much maintenance, fragile and will always have a certain degree of unpredictability that is comparatively absent in robotics.

For example all these bipedal monkeys we have running around all over the place...

Arthur C Clarke lived to 2008 so he lived long enough to see his communication prediction come true. What a genius!

@chris murphyi think peta wouldn't like it.

@Dartmoor Kid are you kidding me? You need to listen to this again because up until he starts describing computers inside our brains, every single thing came true.

Quintessence

I'm so glad to hear this because I came to the comments to ask how long he lived. It's wonderful that he was able to realize how true his predictions were.

So he's been burning in hell since 2008 , well I never .

He was also a kind person. He actually answered a letter I wrote him describing an invention of mine. I still have that letter in my safety deposit box.

Pendulous Testicularis

Treausure that. That is priceless.

well you better get it out pretty damn fast before the bank bails it in

If you haven't you should make a digital copy available.

@Fredric Henning Not an expert here, but it seems interesting. Which principle have you thought out to detect the exact spot of laser beam interrrupting? Suppose it was not the time/difference detection as ordinary laser or radar detector/weapon aimer had used (and is using till now).
Because, AFAIK such similar quantum principle is used in detection of faulty optic cable, for example during loong thousands-kilometers journey under the ocean. I was told it uses some heisenberg and quantum principles in the laser beam.
Each optic cable now uses multiple laser beams modulated, to increase its data transfer capacity, as you surely know, so it is probably not possible to distinct an error / crack in transfer medium as an source of reflection (an exact place of such a crack).
Thanks for the answer at some future, see ya 😀
