Elizabeth Harper is a former drama student from Los Angeles, USA. Harper also pursued a solo career as an indie rock singer-songwriter. She released a studio album Elizabeth Harper in 2004 (2005 in the UK and 2006 in Japan). After the producer Mark Richardson remixed a song, she preferred Richardson’s version to the original, and the two eventually reconvened in Brooklyn. They began fusing Harper’ songs with sampled drumbeats and synthesized instruments and named the collaboration Class Actress. Later, multi-instrumentalist/engineer Scott Rosenthal joined the group.
In 2010, Class Actress released the 5-track EP Journal of Ardency on Chris Taylor’s (of Grizzly Bear) Terrible Records.
In October 2011, the band released the debut album Rapprocher (meaning "to come closer" in French) on Carpark Records. The album received many positive reviews. The single "Weekend" supported the album.

Hangin' On
Class Actress Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
'Cause you know you're the only one for me
All the business, love tricks
You know it's true face things
The way you put my head
The way you hold my neck
The way throw me down
Against the wall
Hands on my waist
I can hardly breath
I can hardly wait
You keep me hangin' on, hangin' on
Keep me hangin' on, hangin' on
No escape, no escape
Wondering, wondering
What I do, What I do
To do it wrong
Would you walk away
Can you get away
Just a little things that you do
It's just an excuse to be lonely
Because you know you're the only one I use
I think you following, you following me
But going you
The way you put my head
The way you hold my neck
The way throw me down
On the bed
Against the wall
Hands on my waist
I can hardly breath
I can hardly wait
You keep me hangin' on, hangin' on
Keep me hangin' on, hangin' on
No escape, no escape
Wonderin', wonderin'
What I do, what I do
To do it wrong
Would you walk away
Can you get away
Little things that you do
Crazy love
Nothing I can do about it
Crazy love
What you gonna do about it
You keep me hangin' on, hangin' on
Keep me hangin' on, hangin' on, oh
No escape, no escape
Wonderin', wonderin'
What I do, what I do
To do it wrong
Would you walk away
Can you get away
Little things that you do
The lyrics of Class Actress's song Hangin' On describe the experience of being trapped in a dysfunctional, codependent relationship. The subject of the song is unable to break free from their partner's hold on them, even though they know that the relationship is harmful and unfulfilling. The first lines of the song reveal the subject's awareness of their own loneliness, and the fact that they are using their partner's company as an excuse to avoid facing it. The subject acknowledges that their partner is not the right person for them, but they are unable to move on because they feel like they have no other options.
The chorus of the song repeats the phrase "keep me hangin' on," which reflects the subject's feelings of entrapment and hopelessness. They are stuck in this relationship and unable to escape, no matter how hard they try. The lyrics also suggest that the partner is physically and emotionally abusive, with lines like "the way you throw me down" and "hands on my waist, I can hardly breathe." Despite this abuse, the subject is still drawn to their partner and unable to leave them.
Overall, Hangin' On is a haunting portrayal of a toxic relationship, and the lyrics underscore the complex emotions that people can experience when they are struggling to leave a partner who is not right for them.

Best song on the album by a mile. The production on this track is ridiculous.
