Born in Cannes, Bolling studied at the Nice Conservatory, then in Paris. A child prodigy, by age 14 he was playing jazz piano professionally, with Lionel Hampton, Roy Eldridge, and Kenny Clarke.
He wrote music for over one hundred films, mostly French, starting with the score for a 1957 documentary about the Cannes Film Festival, and including the films Borsalino (1970), and California Suite (1979).
Bolling is also remembered for a series of "crossover" collaborations with classical musicians. His Suite for Flute and Jazz Piano Trio with Jean-Pierre Rampal, a clever and charming mix of Baroque elegance with modern swing, was a top seller for many years, and was followed up by other works in the same vein. It was particularly popular in the United States, and it was at the top of the hit parade for two years after its release.
Following his work with Rampal, Bolling went on to work with many other musicians, from different genres, including Alexandre Lagoya, Pinchas Zukerman, Maurice André, and Yo-Yo Ma. He has also worked with, and performed tributes to many others, including Lionel Hampton, Duke Ellington, Stéphane Grappelli, Django Reinhardt, Oscar Peterson.
He is considered to be the father of modern jazz.

Not for a year but ever and a day
The radio and the telephone and the movies that we know
May just be passing fancies and in time may go
But oh, my dear, our love is here to stay
Together we're going a long, long way
In time the Rockies may crumble, Gibraltar may tumble
But our love is here to stay
In time the Rockies may crumble, Gibraltar may tumble
They're only made of clay
But our love is here to stay
The lyrics of Claude Bolling's song "Love is Here to Stay" convey a sense of endurance and commitment in a romantic relationship. The opening lines make it clear that the love between the two people in the song is not temporary but is going to last forever. This profound love is compared to various aspects of contemporary culture such as the radio, the telephone, and movies that may be fleeting and short-lived. These things may go out of fashion or cease to exist with time, but the love between the two people is here to stay.
The second stanza continues the same sentiment of the everlasting nature of their love. They are in it for the long haul, and nothing can shake their commitment, not even natural wonders like the Rockies or the Rock of Gibraltar. These things, though mighty, will fall one day as they're only made of clay. However, their love will persist through time.
Overall, "Love is Here to Stay" is an optimistic song about the enduring quality of love that can last a lifetime. It suggests that, despite the many challenges that life may throw at a couple, love can triumph over them and last forever.
