He was one of the most important figures in music at the turn of the 20th century; his music represents the transition from late-romantic to 20th century classical.

Debussy's most dramatic contribution to music history was his disregard for traditional chord structures and tonality. He is one of the most important exponents of the whole tone scale in classical music history. His compositions flowed without a strict sense of metre or rhythm, and are considered the pioneering works of the Impressionist genre of classical music, named in comparison with the visual arts movement.

Debussy's impact was far reaching. His free use of harmony, which often altogether disregarded the concepts of tertian harmony, has been cited as an influence on the rise of Jazz music later in the 20th century.

@redrothko agree about Pollini, though having said that: his 'Ca que vu le vent d'Ouest' from Bk 1 of Preludes is the best i've ever heard. for Debussy generally, i recommend Gieseking or Thibaudet, though i've also heard good things about Richter (but not heard much of his Debussy)

The music of debussy is multi-layered, and this is as important as his harmonic nventions. The rendering of Michelangeli makes all these layers sensitive.

Michelangeli's playing is truly impeccable (I've had his recording of this piece on LP for 30 years). I regard him as I do Pollini - perfect and no complaints about his technique, but almost too perfect to put any soul into it. The "soul" is clearly studied, and the android Commander Data could have performed it in this way. Perfect - nothing really to complain about - but does anyone else think like me there is an indefinable something missing?

Hmmm.... Michelangeli's rendition, like all of his work, is carefully crafted to be an unimpeachable artefact, and to offer criticism of it on very fine points of personal taste can seem somewhat indulgent. Perhaps you are wishing for contemporary audio reproduction quality, although personally I find the obsolescent recording technology adds the character of a historic recording, without marring the actual rendition. Let's just say that Michelangeli's reading is of a perfectly crystal clear Moonlit night, with the Moon standing out in crisp clarity against a perfectly dark sky; whilst someone of your sensibility might wish to compare it with Arrau's reading, where it seems there is some moisture in the atmosphere, and the Moon appears slightly softer around the edges: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zUBOjGRjb2w

To say that such a person does not understand Debussy is a bit overstated perhaps... again, the inevitable comparison with the perfect MIDI comes up, that could perfectly execute Debussy's music as it is written... Perhaps it is that one needs a human touch/interpretation to appreciate Debussy fully. Not saying that such is lacking for me personally though, just some thoughts.

The pianoforte is a machine, as are the condenser microphone, the magnetic tape recorder, the cathode ray tube television camera and the radio transmitter. Michelangeli on the other hand is obviously a human being, and a pianist whose most inimitable quality perhaps is his capacity to convey the sense of an ultimate single perfect execution of a piece of written music, even though such a thing cannot possibly exist.

In some contexts, it was and continues to be (written for machines). Many musicians in the 20th century had to adapt to new recording technology, which, in the least, impacted the length of compositions. Mind you, Debussy was not writing for MIDI. However music is written for machines and on machines all the time.
