He was one of the most important figures in music at the turn of the 20th century; his music represents the transition from late-romantic to 20th century classical.

Debussy's most dramatic contribution to music history was his disregard for traditional chord structures and tonality. He is one of the most important exponents of the whole tone scale in classical music history. His compositions flowed without a strict sense of metre or rhythm, and are considered the pioneering works of the Impressionist genre of classical music, named in comparison with the visual arts movement.

Debussy's impact was far reaching. His free use of harmony, which often altogether disregarded the concepts of tertian harmony, has been cited as an influence on the rise of Jazz music later in the 20th century.

Just realized that in the slow section of the song, in the first few bars of it, if you were to remove the B flat, you'd get the melody of Gershwin's I Got Rhythm. Just noticed, don't know if there's a connection there.

@Piano Spiel Debussy did have a fascination with the syncopated ragtime music of the time, which evolved into jazz. Bill Evans, in particular, was very much influenced by Debussy. Maybe Gershwin was influenced by his works. Maybe he heard it when he came to Paris.

@Lai Yin Quan of course! I don’t let the trauma of enduring those horrible things when i was younger (and even now and definitely in future) cloud my ability to google things lol. The song itself should be set aside from the name and context. It isn’t about doing awful things to people with darker skin, it just follows names that were dubbed appropriate at the time. Much like how ‘coloured’ used to be acceptable and but now isn’t. Times change and we must change with them but this, like great music has historic meaning so we must accept it willingly if we want to move on progressively and together right? Although i would take everything i say as gospel im still a teenager. I just don’t believe in overlooking truth by feelings but i still don’t believe in invalidation. People have feelings but history is history. All we can do is learn from it and appreciate that progress. I’m not sure if that made sense because queens english isn’t my first understanding of English (dialect wise). But thank you!😅

No one wants to cancel it dont worry. It just sets the time period really into perspective especially if you look into the disturbing history at the time. But it is an amazing piece of music especially for Debussy’s easiest piece. Separate the song from the story is probably best haha. Translating to ‘the little negro (or n word)’ and the ‘golliwogs cakewalk’ both things i have been called in my life, i can tell you now- it’s uncomfortable but it was the 19th century so no one is mad. Just very uncomfortable 😬 but it is good music i refuse to deny that so dont worry about to ‘barbaric’ people who dont appreciate racism its just the facts of the past which still haunts us. But we musnt associate that and resinate it within the actual music. 😊😁

Debussy has anything to do with any concept of racism. The title is more an easy one to "honor" the fact that the rhythm is borrow from the black americans inventively. We can't cancel the culture of the past because it is our "patrimoine" of humanity. Most black people are above all this but blm need promote racism to have a cause to fight for.
