He was one of the most important figures in music at the turn of the 20th century; his music represents the transition from late-romantic to 20th century classical.
Debussy's most dramatic contribution to music history was his disregard for traditional chord structures and tonality. He is one of the most important exponents of the whole tone scale in classical music history. His compositions flowed without a strict sense of metre or rhythm, and are considered the pioneering works of the Impressionist genre of classical music, named in comparison with the visual arts movement.
Debussy's impact was far reaching. His free use of harmony, which often altogether disregarded the concepts of tertian harmony, has been cited as an influence on the rise of Jazz music later in the 20th century.

Tremendous work. The day starts. The dew vanishes into the sky. Maybe a sole bird wets his wings in the damp air?
If you listen carefully around 2:40 , the clouds rise and collapse. Rise and collapse during the day. Then 3:20 the chilling gust of wind that always seems to happen right before the rain. 3:28 Drip-drip. Drop-drop. Drip-drip. Drop-drop. The rain?
The water gathers in puddles, and finds its way to the stream, to the river, and to a river branch and out to the sea.
Maybe 6:52 adds the sound of steam vessels puttering by or a coal barge passes - its boiler rumbling in the ambiance.
This is a delightful piece of art. Each note a brush stroke of the masterpiece transformed from Debussy's memory to music.

2:22 gets me every time. It’s just heartbreakingly beautiful

Whoosh! I'm RIGHT there with you! Every single time this one part lifts me up and floats me away.

Thank you finally someone that notices this incredible part of the song

For me, it was always 1:30 that got me every time. But 2:22 is absolutely beautiful, too.

Debussy's use of harmony was truly magnificent.

I totally agree with you

One of my favorite pieces of all time - I feel like you can see the scene because the music is THAT expressive and magnificent.

I've always thought that Debussy's work could open up different dimensions. I think that's what sets him apart from other composers. Every time I hear one of his symphonies I get a story idea. Like for this one; the last man on earth walks the quiet, barren town streets but is he being watched? Brilliant, absolutely brilliant!

this is the original Hollywood film score music...... the great Hollywood scores imitated Debussy, he created it, in the 1890s

I love this song: emotionally sweeping, yet calm. A little noisy on page turns and things, but still well done!
