Rêverie
Claude Debussy Lyrics
Our love is a dream, but in my reverie
I can see that this love was meant for me
Only a poor fool never schooled in the whirlpool
Of romance could be so cruel as you are to me
My dreams are as worthless as tin to me
Without you life will never begin to be
So love me as I love you in my reverie
Make my dream a reality
Let's dispense with formality
Come to me in my reverie
Our love is a dream, but in my reverie
I can see that this love was meant for me
Only a poor fool never schooled in the whirlpool
Of romance could be so cruel as you are to me
My dreams are as worthless as tin to me
Without you life will never begin to be
So love me as I love you in my reverie
Make my dream a reality
Let's dispense with formality
Come to me in my reverie

Achille-Claude Debussy (22nd August 1862 – 25th March 1918) was a French composer. He was one of the most important figures in music at the turn of the 20th century; his music represents the transition from late-romantic to 20th century classical.
Debussy's most dramatic contribution to music history was his disregard for traditional chord structures and tonality. He is one of the most important exponents of the whole tone scale in classical music history. Read Full BioAchille-Claude Debussy (22nd August 1862 – 25th March 1918) was a French composer. Debussy's impact was far reaching. His free use of harmony, which often altogether disregarded the concepts of tertian harmony, has been cited as an influence on the rise of Jazz music later in the 20th century.

Best dynamics of tempo and volume of any piano rendition of this masterpiece that I've heard. Such melodies put Debussy in very exclusive company, and he produced dozens. This one was made into a popular song in 1938. (Larry Clinton Band, sung by Bea Wain.) It's worth a listen. Here are the lyrics:
"Our love is a dream, but in my reverie

Debussy's music is simply magical. It's kind of dreamy, ethereal, and somehow it makes you feel nostalgic for something that never happened before in your life. Something that you want to seek for the most, i.e your dream landscape.

@Gervaze Joseph I have known the truth of your profound words since the first time in my childhood (I'm now 69) I heard Claire de Lune. Even so, I could never have expressed it. Debussy's music makes my heart soar. Many thanks for your comments.

debussy’s pieces have been through everything with me. happiness, sadness, heartbreak, guilt, anxiety. they’ve seen it all.

I've never been a fan of classical music, my mom taught piano my entire childhood and it made me despise it. I was so sick of it all. But one night, about half a year ago, I broke down and sobbed on the floor of my bedroom at one in the morning. I turned on the first playlist I could find to help me calm down, and it was Debussy's music. It actually made me cry harder, which wasn't what I was exactly looking for, but it honestly spoke to me in a way that nothing's ever spoken to me before. I think I stayed on my floor crying for hours, all to this music. I just couldn't really stop. But it was beautiful then, and it's beautiful now. Honestly, whenever I hear this song, I cry. But now it's not from sadness. It just makes me feel understood somehow?? It makes me feel peace. It makes me feel so light I could float away in the wind. I dunno man, but when you listen to Debussy's work it makes all the things you worry about seem so small and meaningless. It forces me to remember how brilliantly breathtaking the world really is.
I have an uncle that's struggling with a lot of mental health problems, and I've never been able to connect with him. But today while he was at our house, I found the sheet music to this song, printed it off, and asked him if he would play it for me. He's a brilliant musician, but I've never taken the time to actually listen to him play. This time I did. It was an experience I will never be able to forget. Wow was it beautiful. I just sat there with my eyes closed and felt more peaceful than I've ever felt in my life. Music is so incredibly underappreciated for the things it can make you feel. I don't know how else to say it. I wish I could make you understand how incredible it is.
So now, if you ask if I enjoy listening to classical music, or what my favorite piece is, I won't roll my eyes. I think I might cry instead.
