He was one of the most important figures in music at the turn of the 20th century; his music represents the transition from late-romantic to 20th century classical.

Debussy's most dramatic contribution to music history was his disregard for traditional chord structures and tonality. He is one of the most important exponents of the whole tone scale in classical music history. His compositions flowed without a strict sense of metre or rhythm, and are considered the pioneering works of the Impressionist genre of classical music, named in comparison with the visual arts movement.

Debussy's impact was far reaching. His free use of harmony, which often altogether disregarded the concepts of tertian harmony, has been cited as an influence on the rise of Jazz music later in the 20th century.

Thank you for the suggestion> I have already tried it, but I only ever sight read parts of it. I find the right hand bit difficult as my timing skills are very poor. Especially with triplets D=. There was a book at my school in the music department which contained this song as well as few others of debussy's work. It is very peaceful ^^

masterofdizzzaster Maybe. :) It seems to be the consensus; however, I prefer this version exactly because it is a little faster and lighter. I think Debussy sounds best when his sonorities are mostly taken as a matter of fact, rather than something to be savored.

I am in awe at the mastery of this interpretation. I just ordered the complete Debussy piano recordings by Crossley. Thanks a million for posting this. For all who are curious, the title of the collection is "Debussy: The Complete Works for Solo Piano" and it's available on Amazon for about $12.00 new (a steal) from independent sellers. There are two versions listed there; the version with Debussy's face on the cover is the one being sold for around that price.

yeah, i know, it is such a nice piece to have in the syllabus, i dont know about you but i was shocked at how easy the other pieces were, i thought grade 8 was super hard or something

some can be taken up by the other hand. or you can roll them... arpeggiated chords are all over debussy's works as if he expect you to play most chords like that. e.g. will be in one bar but not all the repetitions. its the easiest way to resolve the issue of too-big chords with most composers (without omitting notes, and when can't be played in other hands) but debussy its part of the style that it makes sense to roll chords a lot anyway!

The song is easy overall, but there’s lots of tricky articulation that you wouldn’t notice right away… Unless you’re really good like my teacher - he roasted me by pointing out everything I missed 😂

I swear my keyboard has this as one of the demo songs and I couldn't find it anywhere. Those stupid sites where you can search for pieces by playing the melody don't even allow chords or notes lower than the octave around the middle c. How you are supposed to find anything with those limitations is beyond me

this is definitely not the fastest interpretation out there. preludes should not take themselves too seriously; their origin is a warm-up. it's tempo rubato and full of contrasting dynamics but still needs drive, it shouldn't be tempo sleepy sweet snoozefest or dripping emotional.

Sarah Clayton hey there’s always some way you can get it eiether by technique or practice but I know you’ll get it! If it’s physically impossible for you play a substitute note or only play the outer notes/the notes that give it the most sound

Catch the stretchy top notes in the bass clef with the right hand e.g the F10 chord in the intro, take the A with ur right hand

Yeah playing thirds is always hard lol they take some getting used to, at 2:26 there isn't a roll you must mean the octaves in the left hand I'm assuming? This piece should be attainable for me considering I have played debussy before

I said roll because you have to roll it --> (Broken chords really fast) unless you have huge hands, but yeh the big chords. I didn't mean a glissendo, if that's what you though i meant xD. Well good luck with the piece. Also if you get the time check out ABRSM B:8 by G.F Pinto sonata movement 1. It is really nice ^^

sounded strange in parts... those aren't steccatto marks you know! they are tenuto-someone opposite whilst keeping detachment between notes. there are other places where dynamics are just ignored. it sounds fine it just takes me by surprise hearing it.

Not particularly You see the bit at 0:30 2nd line , that is awkward on the fingers and will take a bit to get. Also the the first line at 2:26 you have to roll on the chords which is awkward. Its one of the easier pieces on the Grade 8 ABRSM syllabus I think.
