He was one of the most important figures in music at the turn of the 20th century; his music represents the transition from late-romantic to 20th century classical.
Debussy's most dramatic contribution to music history was his disregard for traditional chord structures and tonality. He is one of the most important exponents of the whole tone scale in classical music history. His compositions flowed without a strict sense of metre or rhythm, and are considered the pioneering works of the Impressionist genre of classical music, named in comparison with the visual arts movement.
Debussy's impact was far reaching. His free use of harmony, which often altogether disregarded the concepts of tertian harmony, has been cited as an influence on the rise of Jazz music later in the 20th century.

This is what I love about classical music. The music has the ability to put an image in your mind the way it sounds. Love it. I imagine an huge open space.

It is the origin of movie music
Gatofranco
And there sails Odissey, tied to the mast, listening to these choirs and feeling the compelling impulse of throwing himself into the sea to mingle with these astounding creatures and enjoy their melodies to death. His sailors, deafened with wax seals on their ears not to listen to this deadly spell, row firmly against the currents to safer waters, until the spell fades away with distance when their ship leaves the Sirenes realm. Debussy really describes scenes with counterpoint and harmonies beyond musiians of his time. His hexatonic scales throw you into oniric experiences so related to daydreams. Today's cinema music still nurtures from these sources of emotions and impressions as, redundance aside, impressionist have done so in the turn of the XX Century. Beautifuly Awesome.

Debussy takes you places you never knew existed and somehow you recognize them upon arrival, or at least that part of you that responds to the sublime. C’est une pure merveille.

This was pre-Walt Disney Concert Hall. Don't know where they recorded it, but I remember Salonen conducting this in San Diego w/LA Phil. Also on the program: Lutoslawski Piano Concerto (followed Nocturnes), and second half was Debussy's Images. Believe it or not, I never saw so many people walk out during an orchestra concert (the walkouts happened during Images). My theory was that they were upset the tunes weren't good enough

Voices, orchestra well-balanced; acoustics excellent (Disney Concert Hall?); gain devoid of any clipping : A+!
