You've got me in between the devil and the deep blue sea
I forgive you, 'cause I can't forget you
You've got me in between the devil and the deep blue sea
[Repeat: x2]
I ought to cross you off my list
But when you come a-knocking at my door
And I come running back for more
I should hate you, but I guess I love you
You've got me in between the devil and the deep blue sea
You've got me in between the devil and the deep blue sea
The devil and the deep blue sea
The lyrics to Claude Williamson Trio's song Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea describe a dilemma where the singer is torn between their desire to let go of a toxic relationship and their fear of losing their partner. The phrase "between the devil and the deep blue sea" comes from an old nautical expression meaning being caught in a difficult situation with no escape. The singer acknowledges that the relationship is not healthy, and they should move on, but the temptation to be with their partner is too strong. They feel trapped and unable to make a decision, finding themselves in a precarious position, like being on a ship in a stormy sea.
The lyrics suggest that the singer has gone through heartbreak before and that they have tried to move on. However, they keep getting drawn back into the relationship, unable to resist the pull of their partner. They struggle with conflicting emotions of love and hate, which makes it hard for them to let go. The final lines of the song sum up their situation perfectly: "You've got me in between the devil and the deep blue sea, the devil and the deep blue sea." They are stuck in a cycle of pain and longing, unable to break free from the hold their partner has on them.
Overall, the lyrics of the song convey a sense of helplessness and frustration that many people can relate to when they find themselves in a toxic relationship. The metaphor of being caught between the devil and the deep blue sea is a powerful image that captures the feeling of being trapped and unsure how to move forward.
