I can't really find the words to express just how dearly I hold Sir John in my heart. I've been accused of being too sentimental for recordings I heard first, when it comes to Sir John, but it's not true. He will always remain a great artist. I love the rare video of him and vK at some gathering in the early 60s and Barbirolli walks up to vK, both smiling at each other, and then he brushes off vK's shoulders like a doting father, and touches up his tie... just to tease him. The fondness and love they have for each other is very touching indeed.

I've stated this many times on YouTube and am very happy to reiterate, that in my opinion, and I know in others too, dear Sir John was, and will forever be, one of the finest interpreters of Elgar we shall ever see.

You could be right. Sometimes someone just completely and utterly is able to perfectly convey the magic of another's creations. In this case it's a conductor but it's the same with musicians.
There's a Korean conductor Myung-whun Chung who also seems to turn to gold just about everything he touches.
These rare types are from higher dimensions I think! Whatever the case let's feel deep gratitude.
Thanks for your comment.

Thank you very much for uploading this glorious performance of one of Elgar's greatest masterpieces, and, of course, one of the most sublime variations since Brahms.

at 19:25 is a real magical moment, the beginning of this emotional variation is really out of this universe, the scope of heart-felt emotions poured out this heavenly score is really unbelievable ..let alone the ending of it..i'm tearful in each time hearing it.

Here is a great classic of the repertoire taken from the superb 109-disc box set dedicated to Sir John Barbirolli (https://amzn.to/3mRQZIL)
Sir John Barbirolli will never cease to surprise us. In Elgar, he sets the exact tone for the famous "Nemrod" variation that many conductors stretch to the point that the musical discourse is diluted and loses its tension. During World War II, Sir John Barbirolli used to conduct open-air concerts in front of 3000-5000 people, many more than today's concert halls. He therefore developed abilities that enabled him to obtain maximum power and musicality from the musicians under his direction.. I bought this CD over 20 years ago. It's one of my favorite Babirolli's CDs. Another one is the Mahler synphony No. 5 of EMI recording
