Recorded in public, this interpretation by Sviatoslav Richter is one of the must-see performances. There are few things in the piano repertoire as powerful as "The Hut on Fowls legs / Baba-Yagá" and "The Great Gate of Kiev". Richter's way of playing, on the verge of breaking hammers, is perhaps not taught in any school, you have to bare all your soul and go deep inside yourself to be able to express all the magic of this score... LEGENDARY.

Andy Quinn

I first heard this on vinyl I borrowed from the library. I kept it for months. Unforgettable so many decades later. Richter's conception is dreamlike. Thank you!

@Lisa Fischer An even greater treasure then!

Lisa Fischer

Ma première K7 offerte par mon père... J'étais petite

PabluchoViision

[Starting circa 12:44] The unhatched chicks are pecking at their shells.... the master Richter, has endowed them with the breath of life.... The percussive yet feathery voice he gives them through the chattering chords, for all their slapped density undeniably melodic.... This is magic, pure and simple!

Steve Hugel

I received this recrod on vinyl in the 70's - as a young piano student, I hadn't head of Richter, but I thought his playing was magnificent! I still have the vinyl, in pristine condition.

Craig Wilson

A legendary performance. Wonderful to hear it remastered, with the coughing gone. Thank you.

David Elder

There is still coughing sounds to me like this is the Sofia recording ...

Craig Wilson
