Clay Walker (born August 19, 1969) was born and raised on a farm in Beaumont, TX, the hometown of George Jones. Walker fell in love with country music at an early age, when his father gave him a guitar when he was only nine years old. After he graduated from high school, Walker pursued a musical career full-time, playing concerts across the South, the Midwest, and Canada. For over three years, he toured and went to school, taking courses about the music business. During this time, he acted as his own manager. Eventually, he became the house singer at the Neon Armadillo bar in Beaumont. While performing at the club, producer James Stroud heard Walker and offered to work with the singer. Stroud helped Walker secure a contract with Giant Records, and the pair began working on the vocalist's debut album.
"What's It to You" became a number one hit upon its release in August of 1993, with "Live Until I Die" following it into the pole position later that same year. Both singles were featured on his debut album, Clay Walker, which was released in the fall of 1993. "Where Do I Fit in the Picture," the third single from the album, became a number 11 hit in early 1994. "White Palace" was a flop, failing to crack the Top 40, but "Dreaming With My Eyes Open" became his third number one hit in the summer of 1994, helping make his debut record a platinum album. If I Could Make a Living was not quite as successful as his debut, yet it still yielded the number one title track. Hypnotize the Moon, Walker's third album, appeared in the fall of 1995, preceded by the number two single "Who Needs You Baby." He followed with Self Portrait in 1996 and Rumor Has It in 1997. A Greatest Hits collection appeared in 1998 and a new album, Live, Laugh, Love, was released in 1999. Say No More followed two years later.

Where do you go when it rains in Mexico
Where do you hide when the bottom falls outta the sky
And, Who do ya love, when the one you love's been lovin' someone else
It ain't no fun, tryin' to have fun all by yourself
So, where do you go when it rains in Mexico
I got a watered down Margarita stuck in the sand
Everybody said this is the place to set your spirit free
But, I came out, and the clouds came up and they poured down on me
So
I gotta wring out my shirt when I get back to the hut
I gotta find a place to dry off my coconut
There's a pretty little brown eyed girl flaggin' a taxi cab
She's alone, so she might know
Maybe I should ask
Hey, hey, hey
[Chorus]
She supplied the transportation
I supplied the rum
When we got to the destination
I gave her some, rum
Now I know where to go when it rains in Mexico
Where to hide when the bottom falls outta the sky
And who to love, when the one you love's been lovin' someone else
It ain't been fun tryin' to have fun all by myself
So, where do you when it rains in Mexico
So, where do you when it rains in Mexico
Now I know where to go when it rains in Mexico!
In Clay Walker's song "Mexico," the catchy chorus raises some intriguing questions regarding what people do and where they go when things go wrong in the Mexican paradise. The song describes the singer's experience in Mexico, where he discovers an idyllic spot to set his spirit free amid little umbrellas and watered-down Margaritas. However, the place's charm is short-lived, and the singer finds himself stranded in the rain, with no one to have fun with. The questions in the chorus thus arise as a lighthearted, yet critical take on the other side of Mexico's beauty that people often forget - what happens when it rains or when things don't go according to plan.
In the first verse, the lyrics describe how the clouds came up and poured down on the singer. The chorus immediately kicks in with the central questions, and the second verse continues with the singer looking for ways to dry off his coconut, a metaphor for his head. The lyrics then describe a pretty little brown-eyed girl flagging a taxi cab, and the singer contemplates asking her where to go when it rains in Mexico. In the final verse, he answers his own question as he describes where he went to escape the rain, suggesting that he has found his place in Mexico, no matter the weather.
Overall, the lyrics to "Mexico" offer a relatable message, that even paradise has its downsides. However, through the singer's experience, the song shows that if one knows where to go, who to love, and how to have fun, even the worst rainstorm can't ruin a good time in Mexico.
