Steve and Jane
Clepsydra Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Would you like to come to dinner tonight?
I‘m feeling so lonely tonight.
Like last year, you and me again tonight,
Did your mind clear up all kind of souvenirs?

I‘ll pretend not to care that you denied,
I‘ll pretend not to care, you stroke me again;
I should have know it,
I should have remembered it;
Maybe do you need this?
I won‘t give you satisfaction.

All I see is your pride and selfishness,
And I can‘t stand you anymore;
Do you feel really stronger
Now that you have made me suffer?

Steve and Jane didn‘t have much to say
To each other,
Filling their time with neverending quarrels;
While Jane, after two years
Hasn‘t given up crying,
Steve still goes on
Arguing with his new girl-friend.

Would you like to come to dinner tonight?
I‘m feeling so lonely tonight.
Like last year, you and me again tonight,
Like last year...

Come on, Jane! Don‘t leave me alone tonight,

And the story is still going on...
Come on, Jane! Don‘t leave me alone...

Overall Meaning

The first verse of Clepsydra's song Steve and Jane paints a picture of two people who are not quite over each other yet. The singer, most likely Steve, asks Jane to come to dinner, implying that he wants to spend time with her. He confesses to feeling lonely and recalls a similar scenario from last year where they were together. He asks if Jane's mind has cleared up any old memories, perhaps indicating that their breakup was not entirely amicable.

In the second verse, the singer seems to be struggling with his own emotions. He admits that he will pretend not to care if Jane denies him or if she strokes him again. He acknowledges that he should have known better, and wonders if Jane needs this kind of attention from him. But at the same time, he vows not to give her the satisfaction of knowing how he really feels.

The chorus reveals the singer's frustration with Jane. He sees only her pride and selfishness and cannot stand to be around her anymore. He questions whether she feels stronger now that she has made him suffer. Meanwhile, Steve and Jane's relationship is described as one filled with quarrels, and he has moved on with a new girlfriend, while Jane continues to cry over their breakup.

The final line of the chorus, "Like last year," echoes the sentiment of the first verse, suggesting that the singer is stuck in a cycle of repeating the same patterns with Jane. The song ends with a plea for Jane not to leave the singer alone, indicating that despite everything, he still wants her in his life.
