Alright
Cliff Richard Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

People came from miles around
To pay respects with painted frowns
Hanging round to see the old man down
Underneath the ground

Brother Luke he turned away
And uncle john refused to stay
Doctor tom said don't cry he'll get by
He'll see another day

Alright, it's alright
I'm gonna get to see you
Alright, it's alright
I'm gonna get to see you

But the old man's not so blind
Faked the day so he could find
The only tear to rest upon his hand
They didn't understand

Alright, it's alright
I'm gonna get to see you

Alright, it's alright
I'm gonna get to see you

Overall Meaning

The song "Alright" by Cliff Richard is about the death of an old man and the different reactions of the people around him. The opening line "People came from miles around" implies that the old man was well-respected and known by many. However, the second line "To pay respects with painted frowns" suggests that the mourners are not truly grieving and might be there for show. The line "Hanging round to see the old man down, underneath the ground" describes the funeral and the burial of the old man.

The next few lines reveal the different reactions of some of the family members and friends. Brother Luke turns away and Uncle John refuses to stay, implying that there might be some sort of conflict within the family. However, Doctor Tom tries to console the other mourners by saying "don't cry he'll get by, he'll see another day". The chorus then repeats twice, with the old man saying that he will still get to see the mourners despite his death.

The final verse is the most interesting as it reveals that the old man was actually not blind and had faked his own death to find out who truly cared about him. The line "The only tear to rest upon his hand, they didn't understand" implies that only one person cared enough to cry for him. The song ends on a positive note with the old man saying that he will still get to see the people who truly cared about him.

Overall, "Alright" is a poignant song that explores themes of death, grief, and family dynamics. It reveals the different reactions of people to death and how some might not truly be grieving. However, it also shows that love and care can persevere even in the face of death.

KAY GETAWAY

Got a call from you late last night
Said your whole world was caving in
Never say which way the cards would fall or the world will turn
Knocks you over like a hurricane

Stop trying to write and direct the movie
Those kind of dramas do nothing to me
Come on pick yourself up off the floor
It’s all been cried about before

(Baby) Baby, don’t cry about it
(Maybe) Maybe it’s not as bad as you say it
It’s all gonna be alright
It’s all gonna be alright

I know what you’re feeling
But your wounds will soon be healing
It’s all gonna be alright
So don’t forget it

Yours is not the first heart to be broken
No, it sure won’t be the last
So don’t forget it
When you open the door let the future in
You can move on
Gives you freedom from the past

Wow I'm only just rediscovering Cliff with this album which I didn't know even existed until today 30th July 2019 and just looked up and saw it got to number 4 on the UK charts and also declared gold too. (100'000 in record sales). I honestly didn't think they'd give him a chance again after all the shit. But well done Cliff.
