Green Light
Cliff Richard Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Searching for a green light
Looking for it all night
Using all my keen sight
Searching for a green light

From just this side of midnight
'Til dawn breaks into daylight
Keepin' myself out of sight
Searching for a green light

Well I've heard this story before
But that doesn't stop me searching
It's been so long since you gave me a sign
A sign to stop my head turning
But all I have are just your old memories
But you know baby, baby that's fine
'Cause I'm spending all of my time

Searching for a green light
Looking for it all night
Using all my keen sight
Searching for a green light

From just this side of midnight
'til dawn breaks into daylight
Keepin' myself out of sight
Searching for green light
Lookin' around

But all I have are your old memories
But you know baby baby that's fine
'Cause I'm spending all of my time

Searching for a green light
Looking for it all night
Using all my keen sight
Searching for a green light

Searching for a green light
From just this of midnight etc....

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Cliff Richard's song "Green Light" tell the story of a man who is desperately searching for a sign from a past love interest. He is looking for a "green light" in order to know whether or not he should keep pursuing her. Despite the fact that it has been a long time since he has received any communication from her, he continues to spend his time searching and hoping for a glimpse of that green light.

Throughout the song, there is a sense of urgency and desperation in the man's search, as he uses all of his keen sight and keeps himself out of sight of others to ensure that he doesn't miss any signs from his lost love. He is determined to find that green light, even if it means searching all night until dawn breaks into daylight.

The lyrics also suggest that the man has been in this situation before, but he is undeterred and continues to search. The song seems to be about the struggle of letting go of someone you love and the hope that maybe one day they'll come back to you.

I have played this everyday up my local for last six months prior to UK virus lockdown. Bar staff all singing along with me whilst I do my Cliff moves in the style of Cliff's devil woman video. Slow process but converting the locals, including fans of the Elvis guy. The genius that is Sir Cliff Richard.

I have only heard this song when I listened to my LP of the same name. I no longer have my LP collection so itβ€˜s good to hear it again. I enjoyed the simple light show in the video. I was listening to this LP about 30 years ago when my husband came home with a friend. β€œYour finally listening to some good music instead of that BLEEP Cliff Richard.” the friend exclaimed. This person was always criticizing me for being a Cliff Richard fan. He could not believe it when I told him it was Cliff Richard. At their request I played the LP for them. They liked all the songs on the LP, but their favorite song was Start All Over Again. The friend got his guitar out of his car, while my husband set up his bass guitar. They spend over an hour trying to learn the song. While the friend never became a Cliff Richard fan, he stopped criticizing my taste in music. As one of your American born fans (yes we are here) I would like to wish you a Happy 79th Birthday Sir Cliff.
