Ocean Deep
Cliff Richard Lyrics

Love, can't you see I'm alone
Can't you give this fool a chance
A little love is all I ask
A little kindness in the night

Please don't leave me behind
No, don't tell me love is blind
A little love is all I ask
And that is all

Ooh love, I've been searchin' so long
I've been searchin' high and low
And little love is all I ask
A little sadness when you go

Maybe you'll need a friend
Only please don't let's pretend
A little love is all I ask
And that is all

I wanna spread my wings
But I just can't fly
As a string of pearls
The pretty girls go sailin' by

Ocean deep
I'm so afraid to show my feelings
I have sailed a million ceilings
Solitary room

Ocean deep
Will I ever find a lover
Maybe she has found another
And as I cry myself to sleep
I know this love of mine I'll keep
Ocean deep

Now, can't you hear when I call
Can't you hear a word I say
A little love is all I ask
A little feelin' when we touch

Why am I still alone
I've got a heart without a home
A little love is all I ask
And that is all

I wanna spread my wings
But I just can't fly
As a string of pearls
The pretty girls go sailin' by

Ocean deep
I'm so afraid to show my feelings
I have sailed a million ceilings
Solitary room

Ocean deep
Will I ever find a lover
Maybe she has found another
And as I cry myself to sleep
I know this love of mine I'll keep
Ocean deep

I'm so lonely, lonely, lonely (Ocean deep)
On my own in my room
I'm so lonely
(Ocean deep)
I'm so lonely, I'm so lonely
This love of mine
I'll be ocean deep

I'm so lonely, lonely, lonely
In my room

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Cliff Richard's "Ocean Deep" speak of a deep longing for companionship and love, told through the perspective of a man who is feeling isolated and alone. At the heart of the song is a plea for love, as the singer begs for a chance to be loved and to feel the warmth and tenderness of a relationship. He wants to "spread [his] wings" and find his way in the world, but feels held back by his loneliness and insecurity.

The song blends a sense of desperation with a deep admiration of the ocean, which serves as both a metaphor for a vast, unattainable love and a source of comfort for the singer. While the ocean may represent an unreachable goal, it also serves as a reminder that even in the midst of solitude, there is beauty and majesty all around. As the song builds to its climax, the singer's plea for love takes on an even greater urgency, as he asks his listener to understand that he is "so afraid to show [his] feelings" and worries that he may never find the connection he truly desires.

I produced this track for Cliff, a great memory for me! He gave me a good budget to do a nice string arrangement. Being classically trained, I went for it! The session at Henry Wood Halls was very smooth! The record came out v well, in my estimation, quite majestic! (Great mixing by Keith Bessey)… aaah, those were the days

PS you can hear my string arrangement (plus a French horn!). The great drummer, Graham Jarvis, is on this session, who sadly passed away a year later…

This is probably the most beautiful song I’ve ever heard. My wife and I met in the Philippines and fell in love 38 years ago and this was a song that we remember our first love by. It meant so much because she was from the Philippines and I was from America in the ocean so deep separated us for so long but we are still together

Cliff is a living legend.

This has to be one of the songs I, for one, will never get tired of. Never ever. Simply Beautiful!
