The Time in Between
Cliff Richard Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
The lyrics to Cliff Richard's "Time in Between" express the emptiness and loneliness the singer experiences when he is not with his lover. He observes the sun every morning and the moon at night, but there are times when he cannot see any light because his lover is not with him. Similarly, he can hear her footsteps in the hall and her knock on the door, but there are times when he cannot hear her at all.
The singer reflects on the way his lover used his love and threw him aside, which causes him to cry and feel like he is dying. The chorus repeats the theme of the time in between when he cannot see or hear his lover, emphasizing the emptiness he feels. The repetition of the lines "I don't see a light" and "I don't hear you there at all" adds to the sense of hopelessness and despair.
Overall, the lyrics convey a deep sense of sadness and longing for the singer's absent lover. The emptiness he feels during the "time in between" serves to amplify his love and desire for her when they are together.

The answer is simple I think: The standard of popular music in 1965 was so unbelievably high that even an excellent song like this was able to fall through the cracks. The great thing is though is that it means there are a treasure trove of gems like this waiting to be discovered from that era.
