This classic tune, written by the late Clifford Benjamin Brown, Sr. (October 30th, 1930 - June 26th, 1956) was available originally on a ten-inch LP entitled: NEW FACES-NEW SOUNDS - THE LOU DONALDSON-CLIFFORD BROWN QUINTET (Blue Note BLP 5030). It was released on September 21st, 1953. On the label, it reads: NEW FACES-NEW SOUNDS - LOU DONALDSON QUINTET With CLIFFORD BROWN And ELMO HOPE on Side 1 and Side 2. This classic LP was recorded on June 9th, 1953 at WOR Studios in New York City. Doug Hawkins was the recording engineer. This classic LP was later released on a twelve-inch LP entitled CLIFFORD BROWN MEMORIAL ALBUM (Blue Note BLP 1526) on August 14th, 1956. On the label, it reads: CLIFFORD BROWN on Side 1 and CLIFFORD BROWN-LOU DONALDSON on Side 2. I have both the ten-inch and twelve-inch LPs, with the original mono Lexington Avenue pressings in near mint condition. The latter LP is a deep groove, beaded rim issue, printed circa 1958. I also have the mono 63rd Street pressing deep groove, beaded rim issue, printed circa 1960, also in near mint condition. Furthermore, "BELLAROSA" (BLP 5030) and "BROWNIE EYES" (BLP 5032) were omitted from the twelve-inch LP because of space limitation.

Could you just imagine if Clifford didn’t get in that car and were able to survive to meet Coltrane and have them record Giant Steps together in 1960. This song in itself has some Coltrane changes before they were even called that....

There's nothing better than listening to Brownie... So satisfying.

Rough trying to keep up with Brownie's solo in my head.

Evan Jones

It's rough trying to play eight notes that fast.
