Gran Torino
Clint Eastwood & Jamie Cullum Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Your story is
Nothing more
Than what you see
Or
What you've done
Or will become
Standing strong
In your skin
Just wondering
Gentle now
The tender breeze
Blows
Whispers through
My Gran Torino
Whistling another
Tired song
Engine hums
And bitter dreams
Grow
Heart locked
In a Gran Torino
It beats
A lonely rhythm
All night long
It beats
A lonely rhythm
All night long
It beats
A lonely rhythm
All night long
Realign all
The stars
Above my head
Warning signs
Travel far
I drink instead
On my own
Oh, how I've known
The battle scars
And worn out beds
Gentle now
A tender breeze
Blows
Whispers through
A Gran Torino
Whistling another
Tired song
Engines hum
And bitter dreams
Grow
Heart locked
In a Gran Torino
It beats
A lonely rhythm
All night long
These streets
Are old
They shine
With the things
I've known
And breaks
Through
The trees
Their sparkling
Your world
Is nothing more
Than all
The tiny things
You've left
Behind
So tenderly
Your story is
Nothing more
Than what you see
Or
What you've done
Or will become
Standing strong
Do you belong
In your skin
Just wondering
Gentle now
A tender breeze
Blows
Whispers through
The Gran Torino
Whistling another
Tired song
Engines hum
And bitter dreams
Grow
A heart locked
In a Gran Torino
It beats
A lonely rhythm
All night long
May I be
So bold and stay
I need someone
To hold
That shudders
My skin
Their sparkling
Your world
Is nothing more
Than all
The tiny things
You've left
Behind
So realign
All the stars
Above my head
Warning signs
Travel far
I drink instead
On my own
Oh
How I've known
The battle scars
And worn out beds
Gentle now
A tender breeze
Blows
Whispers through
The Gran Torino
Whistling another
Tired song
Engines hum
And better dreams
Grow
Heart locked
In a Gran Torino
It beats
A lonely rhythm
All night long
It beats
A lonely rhythm
All night long
It beats
A lonely rhythm
All night long
The lyrics to "Gran Torino" by Clint Eastwood and Jamie Cullum speak to the loneliness and isolation that many people feel, despite the beauty and wonder of the world around them. The song describes the story of a person who is struggling to find connection and belonging, despite their best efforts. The lyrics reflect on the fact that the person's world is made up of small things, and that these tiny things are what make up our lives. The engines humming and bitter dreams growing all night long serve as a metaphor for the struggles that the person is facing, and the Gran Torino represents an escape from the difficulties of life, even if it’s a false escape.
The song suggests that despite the hardships we face, we can find solace in the beauty that surrounds us, even if it’s transitory. The gentle breeze and the tender melody of the Gran Torino’s engine help soothe the person, if only for a little while. Ultimately, the person’s world is defined by the things they leave behind, and the song urges us to treasure those small moments of joy and connection.

A movie for all time, one that will never age. A coming of age story for two men, one young and one old. A movie that touches the heart. Thank you Clint, Jamie, the very talented supporting cast and the entire production team for creating this quiet masterpiece.

This is Clint Eastwoods' best acting role and movie directed by him. I still can't believe it wasn't nominated for Best Movie, Best Director, and/or Best Actor. I always cry when I watch this video. What a powerful movie with powerful themes.
