This is honestly why i prefer Mass Effect's story telling to Halo's... Halo is a very bleak universe. Yet the games are so grandiose. Almost all the time. I feel like those very few sad moments. Don't do how bleak it really is, justice. What it does have, is iconic. Sure... but really? I think what you see in ME 3's intro, is better than what you get in Halo. Save for maybe the deaths and glassing scenes in Reach. But it still feels underwhelming. Barely scratching the surface. While Mass Effect really does the bleakness of it's universe justice.

Halo 3 lets you know that humanity only has most of Earth left. From some dialogue in a scene.

Mass Effect 3 shows you how humanity loses everything but a few scraps of their own species.

Halo Reach and a few scenes in the other games. Are the only things in the games. That barely even scratch the surface of just how fucked up everything is... The games don't tell you about the flood cannibal cults... the games don't really even tell you just how many people died in the human covenant war... etc... that's all in the books.

@SagaciousNemesis you also gave her her planet back dude so like quite honestly let her and Shepard love if they want to. Tali was my choice through my first playthrough back in the day, she was Tough, Brilliantly intelligent, and had a fire in her. Ashley is a racist, and Liara will outlive most of humanity. Also Tali can't get pregnant with Human genetics, their DNA is different like Turians, so for child free people Tali's the GOAT. Also as far as her life being in danger goes, it was in danger from the moment she was mentioned in conversation in ME1, and continued to be in danger from that point up until the Crucible in ME3. Her immuno-deficiency issues are not as big a concern as the entire galaxy being eradicated by the Soylent-Green Robots. She flat out tells you she'd rather risk an infection touching you with her actual hands than to die not knowing that feeling, and doses herself up with a ton of vaccinations and antibiotics to feel love at the end of everything.

These days I'm trying a playthrough with Miranda as the love option.

Absolutely. No other game like this. I absolutely loved the legendary trilogy. This game was so adventurous and amazing. I became so attached to my commander Sheppard. They don’t make them like the trilogy anymore. People talked shit about part 3 but part 3 makes todays games look like shit.

ME3 was no masterpiece, 1 and 2 were excellent but 3 falls short. EA forced Bioware to cut corners and rush, the game lacked that final bit of polish to make it great. I've never replayed 3 but have done so 1 and 2 countless times. Shame as it still had some great individual scenes...

ME 1 was like "hey, this is a new, well-done universe that is waiting for you"
ME 2 was like "hello again my friend, you will have a fu****g great time"
ME 3 was like "so my friend, this is the last time that we meet. say goodbye because it's over"
And because of ME 3 I can't play trilogy anymore. This is not a game. This is a memory. Memory of a great time that you had over a few years with your friend. And now you don't have a contact with this friend. He's gone or something. This is how I feel about ME. It's really something more than a game.

I remember the first time i played ME unfortunately i didnt do it in chronological order and actually began backwards, started with ME3 then ME2 and still havent played ME1 but yeah... Not a single disappointment with every game, all of them were so badass for their time.

I appreciate that the song is a masterpiece, it really is. But I feel that you need to have context to FULLY understand this song. You need to know the point at which this song is played in the game. You need to understand what the situation with the galaxy and the Reapers is. You need to know everything that has lead up to this moment. You just need that scene of all those ships leaving earth, with the Reapers obliterating everything in sight to fully understand the song. A true Masterpiece.

For a month I have been playing this trilogy, it has touched me on a deep level. When I play I really feel that I am the one who fires the trigger that kills a being or who finds the medal of a deceased husband and returns it to its enduring owner. I have left the ME1 with some incomplete secondary missions, and although I barely go in ME2, I cannot and do not want to go back because in "real life" it cannot be done, but neither to go forward and avoid the loss of a friend. I feel more "me" in this series than in any other, perhaps almost as "me" as in real life. I LOVE this saga.

I just beat ME3 for the first time with the Legendary Edition (bought it months ago, and never played the series till like 2 weeks ago) and damn. The Mass Effect trilogy has shot up there as easily one of my favorite game series out there.

The whole time when the Reapers were showing up, and this was playing, you can almost just feel the dread that Shepard does. And it shows how dangerous the Reapers are and how they need to be taken out. Also, can we just talk about how this song is similar to the one at the end of the game when you finally defeat the Reapers? Like, damn.

Its ending may be not as expected, but Mass Effect 3 succeeded in reflecting a dreadful and hopeless war in galactic scale. That's what I love about this game. It makes you feel like there is no hope against the Reapers at all.

A decade has gone by, a friking decade... and this piece still brings tears to my eyes.
Althought the ending is what it is, the trilogy was about the journey to me, not only the destination.
I've replayed it at least once a year, every time it touches my soul.. and now with the new Mass Effect in works, I hope with all my heart that it will touch my soul at least half of how the original trilogy did.

@Optic Midnight Finished my first play through recently. I mostly played paragon with a bit renegade usually I just act how I feel in my first play throughs but I did want to be the hero and win. Tho I did kill counselor udina just cause I felt like it lmao but I ended up picking control ending and used the reapers to help further the galaxy. I definitely was happy about it 60-80 hours well spent.

This is one of the most heartbreaking music ever it moves me even after all this time. The ME trilogy music should have more recognition than it has it's epic and it's as recognizable as the games. I really hope there will be a ME4 the problem is that ME as the story of Shepard was always meant to be a trilogy so it's very difficult to continue the saga without him/her. And please stop hating on Andromeda it was a good game I liked it but it had the impossible task to follow such masterpieces. It's no coincidence that to this day nobody has been able to make a sci-fi game comparable or even remotely similar to ME.

I might be insane, or maybe Legendary Edition was a drastic difference in experience, but ME3, in my opinion, had my favorite opening, the best combat, some of the best comedy, character moments, and a mostly satisfying buildup to the end, keep in mind I said BUILDUP. Some of the best moments of the trilogy are there, and some of the worst, and although ME2 is probably objectively better, ME3 captures the finality of the trilogy in a climactic, yet gut wrenching way. And it all started with this beautiful piece of music.

Mass Effect 3 started out so damn well. The attack on Earth was so emotional and the soundtrack is easily the best in the series and one of the greatest ever. But as the game went along, more and more inconsistencies and plot holes kept appearing. And then the godawful ending happens.

This’ll probably seem weird but Mass Effect 3 was the very first ME game I played. I remember getting it for Christmas (even though I don’t think I asked for it) and I looked at the game cover and I was like “this seems kinda cool” so I gave it a try. When I first watched this scene and heard this song play I remember thinking that this game would be something special. I eventually beat it and was a bit disappointed with how my play through went because I didn’t do a good job at gaining allies and I didn’t understand how the Paragon/Renegade system worked. Many years later and here I am. I’ve now played through ME 1 and 2 and I now understand most of the story and why so many people love this series. I’ve been a Halo fan for most of my life and I never thought a series could really rival it… until I saw my friends like Kaiden, Mordin and Legion all sacrifice their lives for galactic peace. How I kept smiling when I reunited with old friends like Wrex and Liara. I’m not entirely sure how my current play through will turn out but whatever the ending might be, I’m just glad I was finally able to truly experience this trilogy. Halo may be my first love, but Mass Effect comes at a very close second 🥺

The memories I have playing this game are more intense then any other. I get chills when I hear this track. And I get tears thinking about this trilogy and what a fantastic experience I had playing it. Damn , this trilogy is so much fun en amotional. Music is simply masterpiece. Gampplay, character development, relations, sidequests, ship, planets, bosses, enemies, almost everythin in the game is top-notch, or at least was for me at the time. i played me3 multiplayer for YEARS after it became forgotten by 99% of people and was still fun. None other game made this. Campaign was incredibly engaging. you really get into Shepard's skin, as he became the ultimate hero for the universe

Actually an epic thing happened during FTL on the last part of the final boss. I was listening to this track in the background and I was one hit away from dying. But in five tries my ship dodged every hit from the bosses super weapon. I picked away at his shields with a burst laser then fried a pike beam. I had two crew men teleported on the boss ship and their was no time to beam them back because of the cool down time for the teleporter and the boss was about to fire the super weapon soon. His shields were down so I made a choice and took the boss down with a pike beam while two of my crewmen were still in the ship. I won, the battle ended and I was in shock.

I remember the day I got Mass Effect 3, after all the build up of the Reaper invasion through the first two games, and developing bonds with my favorite characters, I was genuinely afraid of what was going to happen in Mass Effect 3, I was afraid for my favorite characters, for the crew, for Shepard, and the universe I had come to love so much.
I had butterflies in my stomach during the first cutscene when the Reapers had reached the moon.
And during this part of the game I knew things were going to get pretty crazy.
What an absolute journey these games were, I will always cherish them.

I didn’t play ME when the ending controversy happened but having played the trilogy multiple times since then, the ending has never bothered me.

I remember feeling depressed the first time I beat 3 and that made me love the games even more. Just goes to show how effective the storytelling was that fictional characters could elicit such an emotional reaction.

However anytime I play through since I just consider the Citadel DLC the real ending and pretend it’s set after the Reapers are defeated. If there was any mistake with the ending as is, it’s that there was no “canon” happy ending option.

The music alone can make me cry, this track, I am proud of you, I was lost without you, they all make me tear up without even playing the game. I have played through the series so many times, and everytime I care as much about the story and the characters (to the point my Shepherd always looks the same, is always Jenifer Hail and always falls in love with Liara, I did one run to get the other trophies but always go back to this story).

I really hope the new one can do justice to this serie

Deservedly so. I mean, half a decade of build up. Millions of innocent lives sacrificed. Tens of tough decisions involving millions of people's lives being made. And the only thing that you get in the end is a different color. Minimal closure, with little to no epilogue. For a franchise as big as the original Mass Effect trilogy, it deserves a proper epilogue like what Red Dead Redemption 2 has.

And no machine devils does not mean reapers. The reapers are a LESSER evil. ME3 does not explain what the greater evil really is, but by breaking the cycle, the ending is left open for it. The reapers employed crop rotation (reaper, collector, harvester, even shepard are all farming metaphors), destroying a part of the population infrequently to protect the rest most of the time. People say this is bad logic. To a human it is. To an AI, it's simply the result of a poor application of Asimov's laws.

@***** Here's my problem: when I played this game on the EU release date, I was fully immersed in the universe, I had timed it all perfectly and just finished ME2 again when I could finally play ME3. I played the game in full exploration mode and took it all in, enjoyed every second of the gameplay and story and then I come up to the end, once the starchild finished talking I'm just standing there thinking: "What the hell now?". Eventually I went ahead and chose synthesis because I couldn't imagine a world where Jeff and EDI couldn't be together and after the end credits I was simply sad. Not "so impressed by the story that I can't believe its over" sad but plain old dissappointed and depressed. The only thing I could do was go to bed. I've replayed the game since then, with the ending dlc but since I kinda knew how it ends, I was ready for it and I didn't care anymore and just chose to blow the reapers up. Bioware made us care and I applaud them for that, but I don't trust them anymore.

@hoodfigga33 I can easily understand why people don't like it, but I don't quite get being mad at the game and makers. It just feels very much like the "gamer crowd" and teenager reaction to it all. I got a feeling it also depends on how you play these games.
I play these games very much for the story and maybe even more for the atmosphere. The wrap-up isn't as important as the road to it imo.

I was way more sad about the game ending, than I was about the ending. It wasn't about the ending why I played the game.

It is. I have unfortunately become very picky with my games as I have gotten older.
ME was the first game/game series in 6 years that was on my mind all the time and I was experiencing similar stuff as you would do as a kid playing games.
Hell, ME series, Dragon Age, Fallout and Mario Galaxy are the only games in my adult live I have bothered to play all the way.

I remember playing that opening sequence clear as day. Having to leave Anderson and watching Earth be ravaged and those people burn... And having to just turn your back and leave for the greater good of HOPEFULLY, MAYBE returning with some kind of fleet. I remember in that one moment valuing to kill every. Single. Reaper. The song gets me every goddamn time.

They just used this song on an episode of Homeland. I nearly jumped around the room when I heard this.
Surprisingly, this is not the first time this has happened. I heard ME2's love theme on a Food Network show in the elimination section of choosing the next executive chef. I guess EA needs some extra cash... and some indirect gaming product placement.

The main theme for Saints Row 4 was used a couple of months ago by Cinemax for their fall preview or whatever it was. I was pretty shocked considering the game had barely been out for long. Was cool hearing ME3 last night, glad other people spotted that lol

I bought the legendary edition last week, my first ever time playing this incredible series and man ME1 blew me away! I finished it and I’ve just started ME2 today. Really loving this series so far and really annoyed at myself for sleeping on these games for so many years but also kinda glad I waited to play the best version possible.

When I was playing this game for the first time, even though I kinda knew what to expect, this scene still gave me fuckin' chills. Invasion of Mechanical Horrors, sight of explosions everywhere, and that unmistakable, powerful sound which filled your nightmares ever since you saw Sovereign for the first time...
It makes me wonder, if we didn't made biggest mistake ever, sending these probes with golden disks off into dark space.

The ending may of been suck-ish, and controversial;
But, Mass Effect- is, and forever will be, one of the most magnificent game franchises I've ever played. ME, ME2, and ME3 are three of the best games I've ever played.

@***** This is an old topic, but if you think it was about shepard dying, you are dead wrong. It was just about how lazy the ending was. The biggest thing everyone hated was the 'star child'. It was almost like they writers wrote this big epic tale, and by the end of it, they were just like, "I'm so fucking tired of this thing, someone just scribble something down so we can be done with it." It was god awful.
