Doyle Martin, of disbanded pop punkers Grown Ups collaborated with drummer buddy Brian Busch and Robert Merkof.
Despite the frantic, fast paced nature of their other acts, Cloakroom rarely touches on its memberโs previous work. Instead they are found channeling the visceral vocals of David Bazan, laid over quiet ethereal guitar hums that slowly grow into pounding walls of sound, at times bringing to mind a more stoned, yet delicate Jesu. Undoubtedly, comparisons will be made spanning an array of genres from stoner metal to 90โs emo, but what Cloakroom have created with is a flawless conglomeration of sound that until now has yet to be heard. The band released the single "Lossed Over" 7" in 2014, and their debut 2xLP "Further Out" was released in early 2015 on Run For Cover Records. Their second album "Time Well" was released on August 18th 2017 via Relapse Records.

Cloakroom Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
refuses to fill like a dry lake bed
in ponds teaming with life
fragile and finite
ultimately extinguished in your gaze
how can one conclude what stays
I'd speak soundly to the void
some plea for the destroyed
what can you do but stand in place
and the way this planet's turning you can reach the loftiest goals
with the most unrealistic sense of control
let go of what you once embraced
what can you do but stand in place
how do you manage to look so great
The lyrics of Cloakroom's song E are open to interpretation as they address complex themes of human existence and our place on this planet. Starting with the line "Down the further you dig an inverted summit," the song suggests that the deeper we delve into our thoughts and emotions, the more we encounter opposition and contradiction. The phrase "inverted summit" could be interpreted to mean that the closer we come to finding meaning and understanding, the more elusive those things become as we search deeper.
The song goes on to describe the fragility of life with the phrase "in ponds teeming with life, fragile and finite, ultimately extinguished in your gaze." This could suggest the fleeting nature of life, and how easily it can be snuffed out in the face of something greater. The lyrics ask "how can one conclude what stays," suggesting that we are constantly grappling with the impermanence of life and the inevitability of change.
The next lines shift to a political message, as the archers take aim at the most unfortunate few. The song acknowledges the powerlessness that individuals feel in the face of larger forces, but also suggests that there is something to be gained from standing one's ground. The lyrics contend that one can "reach the loftiest goals with the most unrealistic sense of control," implying that even when the odds are stacked against us, it is important to hold on to our sense of purpose and direction.
Overall, the song seems to be grappling with the human condition and the meaning of life. It poses complex questions about the nature of existence while acknowledging our limitations and the forces that shape our lives.
