Beautiful Losers
ClockDVA Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I'm just waiting man move on! move on!
I'm just a thinking man go on! go on!
I'm just an overture for impending doom
I'm just a voice that speaks to you
It had to be that way
I could be no other way
It had to be that way
Oh beautiful losers
Where are you now?
You never seem to win
There's something weird about your bitter erotic sin
You were so perfect
Why did it end that way?

You were the image
You were the power
You had the knowledge
And there was something deeper in your heart
But there was darkness at the centre of it all
I ran and smashed my favourite portraiture
Oh beautiful losers turrn off the light
Oh beautiful losers lay in bed warm inside

I tried to touch you but you were gone
I needed love
And I'm calling out for someone to take your place
Ah? I'm lost again
The beautiful losers never win
Oh beautiful losers you never win

Oh beautiful losers turn off the light
Oh beautiful losers lay in bed warm inside
I tried to touch you but you were gone

Oh beautiful losers
Where are you tonight

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to ClockDVA's song "Beautiful Losers" seem to capture a sense of resignation and longing for something that has been lost. The opening lines, "I'm just waiting man move on! move on! I'm just a thinking man go on! go on!" suggest a desire to move forward, to leave something behind, but at the same time, there is a sense of loss and sadness. The singer refers to themselves as "just an overture for impending doom" and "just a voice that speaks to you," implying a lack of agency or control over their situation.

The chorus of the song, "Oh beautiful losers, where are you now? You never seem to win. There's something weird about your bitter erotic sin," seems to suggest a sense of kinship and identification with those who are struggling, those who have not managed to succeed in the conventional sense. The singer seems to be searching for something that they have lost, perhaps a feeling of belonging or purpose.

The final lines of the song, "Oh beautiful losers turn off the light, oh beautiful losers lay in bed warm inside. I tried to touch you but you were gone, oh beautiful losers where are you tonight," seem to be a final plea to find something that has been lost. The desire for closeness and comfort is palpable, as is the sense of loneliness and isolation.

Overall, ClockDVA's "Beautiful Losers" captures a sense of longing and melancholy, but also a strong sense of empathy and longing for connection with those who are struggling.

Great stuff, I still have the vinyl album that this is on. Bought it way back after hearing their awesome session on John Peel!

AFallingBird

Me too, though the LP suffered a lot of scratches since '83... But "Advantage" is truly a masterpiece, one of these albums that age like a good wine, I love it more with every passing year. By the way, the Peel sessions are really awesome, it's a pity they didn't do more. And I will never forgive myself that I missed the Berlin concert from which I took the footage.... Thanks for watching!

@AFallingBird My Advantage album is still in good nick luckily. Dark Encounter on that JP session is even better than the album version IMHO, plus there is a track called 'Sister' on it which I was always looking to get but never saw anywhere else?

AFallingBird

@Paul Lawrence Yes, unfortunately there has never been an official release of "Sister", but there is a live version on the bootleg cd "Heaven Noir" (which I don't have): https://www.discogs.com/Clock-DVA-Heaven-Noir/release/2666436 . You can find this concert also on youtube : https://youtu.be/9X5sVNUnilk . And you are right, the Peel sessions are excellent; it's not the only time that Peel recordings sounded almost better than official studio versions. Anyway, I have to listen to the Peel version of "Dark Encounter" again and compare it to the album version.... This is one of my favourite Clock DVA tracks, I love the film noir atmosphere on this ;-)
