KIssing Cousins
Closure in Moscow Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

We have never lived, we have
never even tried
Come on now give that burden to me
We have never lived, we're just
creeping all our days
And you could feast an age
Feast and still feel famine all the same
When this food's an orgasm,
dripping context down my drains

We've had our chances
We didn't see them through

It never ends
Carry on the sin
It never ends, it never ends
We can never rest
It's like kissing cousins
it's like breaking bread

Born of detriment
Born of all the ills that lead us in

It gets me so frustrated
Everyone's an expert, I'm so sick of it
It makes me want to gouge a thousand eyes
Choke five hundred throats
Feed them to the fishes swimming
in my moat
While I sit in my castle
Perched all alone
Disconnected on a sullen throne

They're not stopping
It never ends so forever they roam

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Kissing Cousins by Closure in Moscow present a bleak outlook on life, emphasizing an overwhelming sense of dissatisfaction and missed opportunities. The first verse emphasizes this sentiment, claiming that they have never truly lived or tried, and that they simply exist, allowing each day to pass by without taking any meaningful action. The sense of futility is conveyed through the line “you could feast an age, feast and still feel famine all the same,” which suggests that even if they were to try, it would ultimately be fruitless. The idea of food and feasting is used metaphorically throughout the song to describe different aspects of life, with the line “when this food’s an orgasm, dripping context down my drains” suggesting that even pleasure is ultimately hollow and unsatisfying.

The chorus reinforces the idea that life is an endless cycle of sin and restlessness. The repetition of the phrase “it never ends” emphasizes the feeling of eternal repetition and hopelessness. The metaphor of kissing cousins and breaking bread suggests a sense of familiarity with the cycles of life, but also hints at something incestuous and potentially damaging. The second verse goes on to describe a sense of frustration and isolation in the face of this endless cycle. The line “it gets me so frustrated,” emphasizes the anger and impotence they feel, especially in the face of an endless chorus of experts who offer no real solutions. The use of violent imagery like gouging eyes and feeding throats to fishes emphasizes the sense of rage and desperation they feel.

Overall, the lyrics of Kissing Cousins offer a bleak commentary on the human condition, emphasizing a feeling of futility and missed opportunities. The repetitive nature of the cycle of life is emphasized, along with a sense of frustration and anger at the inability to change or escape it.

We have never lived, we have never even tried,

@@someone7554 To be fair, The Mars Volta is a huge influence for most modern prog rock bands. I genuinely believe The Mars Volta are the King Crimson of the 21st century. The singer honestly even sounds like Cedric (in the de-loused days) and I don't think it's on accident.
